Is there any examples of guys in such serious trouble that we would all agree that the fight should have been stopped but that guy goes on to win. Gatti Ward 1 is the first that comes to mind but Gatti didn't win the fight. Easily could have been stopped in round 9.
Even Larry Merchant was calling for a stoppage when Derrick Jefferson was pummeling David Izon. But Jefferson suddenly ran out of gas and Izon won. I wanted Riddick Bowe’s corner to stop the rematch with Andrew Golota. But Golota pulled a Golota so Bowe ended up winning.
McClellan-Benn?? Gatti had a few where idk if they should stopped it but they were close (rodriguez, ruelas).
I watched that fight again and I was shocked at how bad mcclellan looked. Lost every round apart from the ones he dropped Benn. Mcclellan looked so bad, got hit with almost everything Benn threw. Im still not sure if Benn was supposed to get 20 seconds to recover or not. Mcclellan must have been in serious pain to sit out a count. I thought it was a pretty monumental effort by him to get Benn on the canvas again late in the fight after taking so much punishment and probably already having his brain injury developing.
You could argue McKinney-Ncita 1. It looked like McKinney was quitting, as he completely turned his back on Ncita. Smoger called it a knockdown, then McKinney stopped Ncita later in the round.
Smoger was at it again in the Savarese Vs Whittaker fight. Savarese probably was down for 10 seconds but Smoger said something to him that took an extra second and Savarese beat the count. He won a decision.
Lucian Bute looked out of it in the final round against Andrade but was fortunate that the ref saved him.
