Its hard to rank toney if you've seen or heard him speak in the last 2 decades. He could slip punches great but still got hit alot at his peak. Rigondeaux deserves mention over these YT dinosaurs the topic starter listed Stevenson may be the best now, let's see how we feel about him come February
Other defensive boxers not mentioned: Bernard Hopkins James Toney Willie Pep Andre Ward Dmitry Bivol Willie Pastrano Gilberto Roman Miguel Lora Marlon Starling
Not Pernell. You can't claim to have the best defense ever if you can't dodge a car. Gotta be Floyd... dodged punches dodged fights dodged his kids dodged reading... TBE
first time ive seen this posted and always felt this way. i think toney just had a legitimate granite chin.
He certainly did, but he fought not only a hell of a lot of fights but for a very large part of his career he did it right in the pocket. I think it helped immensely that he was so relaxed in the ring. Many of the shots he was able to move just enough to take a lot of bite out of them.
Toney had great defence but terrible movement. He got hit a lot coz he was always ready to hit back. I imagine his slurred speech is mostly from his time at heavyweight and his training.
