I'm not going to pretend to be a lawyer but any time somebody is facing charges and they could be "facing up to..." it would mean if not only convicted, but the judge set the sentence to the max on all of them.

Hard to say on any individual case how likely that would be but it's nice leverage for a prosecutor. Either face 20 years or make a deal and get out in half kind of thing. Longer it goes on the more your dishing out to your lawyers as well so you're getting fucked both ways.
