@Irish if you ever wanna cheer yourself up on twitter(!) this account is basically just short clips of old LFC & CFC goals. Heavy emphasis on Kenny D clips this week

Back in the day I used to always tune into LFC TV and just watch reruns of the 1970s stuff. It's very uplifting.

S.Korea and Japan are indeed on the rise. Big time. I feel like Japan might win a WC in our lifetimes. Or at the very least, make a final.

The JLeague really is pretty strong. They have a lot of full games on YT that I check out. The skill level isn't par with like a top 6 league, but they're about on par with MLS. The skill level is probably even better than MLS, the MLS just has better athletes. The skill level isnt on par with LigaMX, but not significantly behind.

They have some talented players and also squads with strong work ethic. Hard to relax and get a rhythm against them.

No question on their day they can upset one of the major powers, not exactly unheard of. The WC is very difficult to win in that there are multiple rounds and even if you upset one giant, you are likely playing against at least two more. The deeper you go into a tournament the depth of your squad increases in importance due to injuries and cards. The big sides can lose a a guy who started every match and usually replace them with a secondary of quality the smaller teams don't have the luxury of doing.

Thats why I said might. It aint gonna be easy. The top powers will ALWAYS be France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, etc. But before we get old I think we'll see Japan make a very deep run and potentially make a final.

Well even in AFC they've only won one Cup in the last 20 some years and the last one was back in 2011. I don't follow Asia very closely so i'm not sure if the competition has gotten stronger or Japan doesn't care and sends B squads.

Either way i feel they should be romping those competitions before they can realistically win the biggest one of all. If they develop a "golden" generation I will think differently about it.

And of course after i post this the final 4 will be all AFC and i'll never offer an opinion on football again. :Jest:

They'll win a WC before we will. Football is the second most popular sport in Japan behind baseball. It still aint a big enough part of our culture. I cant wait for the USMNT to fail.

On another note there was WC pool of sorts at work. I think the social committee or somebody sent out an email with a .pdf. One woman did a reply all instead of the to the sender so i took a look at the picks. None of it looked "off" really but there was one question which was "Which country will concede the most goals?" Presumably for a tie-breaker as it wasn't a full bracket kind of things, Just winner, runner up and semi finalists.

Anyhow, they answered Mexico which had me scratching my head.

Agreed. I actually think it'll be an Asian side before an African one that makes the breakthrough.

Agreed. Africa's best players are scattered among more countries while Japan/South Korea can assemble better squads and therefore also play more cohesively. They also have stronger leagues.

It's not a competition of all-stars from a continent, it's one tournament one country. Do your best with what you have.

If every nation in the world had football as the number one sport naturally it would improve the quality of the actual play across the board. At the same time it would lose a lot of charm and already does. ( at least for me) I think i posted something similar before but in a sense it used to be a bit more "exotic". I think maybe too much is known. Listening the game "he plays for Southampton", "that guy has scored 8 goals his first year in the Eredivisie."

Element of surprise gets lost when some kid in rural Nebraska or at the C league in east Libya has scouts monitoring him.

We looked good, not gonna lie, but now our media isnt gonna STFU. They're gonna start pretending that we can win this thing. I mean I guess it is a positive if we make a deep run. The nation will be more engaged, which is true of any host nation whose team goes deep.

No! The lad was born in Brooklyn not London, he's right where he belongs. lol

England have arguably the deadliest striker in the world. Balogun wouldn't get to be "the guy" on that squad like he gets to be for us.

Yamal was spotted just casually walking around in a Georgia Walmart, looking happy as Hell shopping. Some starstruck kids noticed him and took a video. I truly think that footballers like the fact that they can walk around here and not get mobbed by fans like they would in Europe. At some point everyone just wants to feel normal.
