It's not even about winning tbh.

There's the Southgate 'pragmatic' approach where you take no risks, pass it around at the back for ages and hope to sneak a win. It gets you to the latter stages of a tournament but you know it will inevitably unravel once you face a genuinely elite opponent.

Or you have this where you actually try and make the most of your attacking talent and have a go. It might mean you take away from defense a bit, but if you go down you won't be left wondering what might have been.

Obviously the ideal scenario is something bang in the middle but we don't have that, so I'd go with the latter option.

Agreed. You talk this way and some people treat it like your saying defense doesn't matter at all. "Just go have fun kids!". You're playing football, not preparing an airplane where safety is paramount. All you can concede is goals, not human lives.

A lot of people like that ultra conservative approach so in a close game they can blame bad officiating/playing conditions/travel/VAR or just simply a case of bad luck. Narrative is always built in, makes the job easier.

Leave it on the pitch, that's why you play.

I gave them a 7, anyways..... Very hard to give higher after conceding 2 and missing a lot of chances.

They gotta be more selective with these hydration breaks.

A bunch of brothas from Ghana and Panama can play in the heat for two straight days without water.

As a Cali resident, I would imagine you're used to being surrounded by Mexicans and Koreans.

Relative to true level I would agree.

We aint on the level of a France, Spain, Germany, Argentina, England, Netherlands, but maybe we score an upset or two. BEST CASE quarterfinals. I dont think quarters, but it's not impossible.

Beyond the quarters would be highly unlikely and I dont expect it.

Aye, the one thing I'd say against the performance was it was really high-octane, hard pressing stuff which tends not to work as well vs the best teams. Poch isn't daft tho so I'm sure they'll adapt

It will depend on what the path looks like. In 02 they made the quarters.

In the round of 16 they faced Mexico who generally is the favorite over them but not by a wide margin and obviously a side they are very familiar with so it wasn't an amazing result they got there.

They could replicate at least that much.

I hope they dont. The American media is fucking insufferable and retarded and has no respect for world football. If it aint American football, baseball, or basketball, they know fuck all and really don't care to try and learn. Speaking to you as a Canadian, they dont even know shit about hockey anymore, so you can imagine how little they know of soccer. Oh, and they think that Pulisic is Johan fucking Cruyff.

The WC should go to a nation that is passionate about the game. The USMNT deserves to crash and burn.

Yeah you sound pretty Scottish. You could sub a few words around & that's why most people here want England to crash and burn at every tourny

England and the US are the two most arrogant nations on Earth. That is well established and most other nations would agree. But at least they know the game.

It'd be like having a basketball World Cup, and England having the temerity to think they're better than anyone else despite not knowing shit about basketball. Thats what American soccer arrogance is like.

Then you got the REAL fuckin retards who say shit like "If LeBron James or Steph Curry had taken up soccer at an early age, Messi wouldn't be the GOAT."

I wish I was joking, but thats really what some fucking American simpletons say.

Yeah the media can certainly be insufferable. It's extra hilarious how brainwashed and stupid people can be when the U.S. doesn't do well at something there is a contingent that dismisses it as "communism". WTF? :Jest:

If its not apart of our culture how the fuck do they expect us to excel? Its an upper middle class sport over here. White toast Pulisic has never known struggle in his life.

What is true of virtually EVERY sport is: Most top guys emerge from the working/lower class.

When Black and Latin kids in the ghetto, and poor White kids, start to love soccer from an early age and are allowed to excel at it WITHOUT having to pay a fortune, only then will we become a player on the world scene.

That day will probably come. Will it come in our lifetimes? Not sure, maybe not.

James or curry taking up soccer is preposterous. Everyone knows Darren sproles would've lead the US to multiple wc victories though

I'm not gonna lie, Steph has the wiry frame, height, and athleticism that if he was 100% dedicated to soccer from a kid MAYBE MAYBE he could be a decent winger or striker. But to say he could ever be a Messi would be an insult.

LeBron is too goddamn big and clumsy to have ever made it in soccer. Its a different skillset.

LeBron fans are the lowest IQ motherfuckers to ever draw breath. This is the same fanbase that has honestly said that LeBron could whup the 80s Tyson with "a bit of training."

If I remember correctly Kobe Bryant played a bit as he grew up in Italy, and said it helped his footwork later on for basketball. I don't think he ever played to any reasonable level though, just kickaround stuff.
