Well to be fair there is no way any announcer is going to know that much in the World Cup. There are more FIFA recognized "nations" than there are counties.

What they could try to do is get a second or third commentator from the conference involved who can add something more than "(checks notes) he plays his club football at Whatever FC"

Would have definitely thought there might have been at least one active LOI player who played in a world cup, especially in the early tournaments, or when the European Cup was more open and straight knockout. Crazy that he's the very first.

Well what's limiting is that the vast vast majority of guys who played LOI football were Irish and as I say we did qualify until 1990 by which stage the feeder system to England was overwhelmingly established.

By 2000, a LOI guy getting his game for Ireland was actually a big story..

Many years ago i worked with a guy with the late name Cabral. I think i will look him up and see if he knows the Cabral on this squad.

Don't kick it over the bar. If you kick it over the bar make sure it's not too high.

Only a former player could provide such insight.

    Things taking shape now.

Egypt looking good. Iran looking good. They meet next.

New Zealand learning that this is a game of margins. They've lead on 3 occasions on two games and got 1 point.

Messi with a chance of breaking the WC goal record today. We'll see if Austria can put up more resistance than the Algerians.

Crazy thing is Mbappe can break Messis record in the same tournament.

Records aside, this has been a pretty shite performance from Argentina. Probably phoning it in at this stage, but they'll have to step it up if they want to retain their title.

180 minutes played and still the only Argentina scorer. We all know 1986 and Maradona, but its not like he's the only guy who put the ball in the net.

How has FIFA planned for these delays and possible postponements? Being smack nab in Central Jersey I'm 45 mins from Metlife and an hour from the Shegulls stadium, so we all have the same weather. Theres lightning storms possible until 11pm tonight.
