I think a lot has to do with how they don't rely on one player. They won it it all in 2018 and Benzema wasn't even on the squad. I think you could omit anyone from France and including Mbappe and their chances wouldn't fall to nil.

Without Messi, Kane, Vinicius , Haaland their teams would still be good be without a prayer. The good news for them is it's not hypothetical, they do have them.

I think Mexico at the Azteca is exactly the type of game England need. The atmosphere, the challenge etc, could be the kind of backs-to-the-wall proposition that makes them raise their game. If Mexico win, fair play to them, but I have a feeling England are gonna rise to the occasion.
