Messi is the absolute GOAT for me, but even saying that, it would have been an absolute disgrace if Argentina had won that. They had zero intent to play football, disgusting performance.

The thing is that in both the 78 and 86 finals they were the best side, largely. But their route to the final was controversial in 1986 and totally wrong in 1978.

 

Full credit to Spain. Unbelievably dominate run. They shut down everyone. Basically were the football equivalent of the 1990 Whitaker all tournament.

 

Brazil and France were basically THE teams for me growing up, Italy too but they really dropped off after 2006. Spain were seen as even more of a 'nearly-team' than England, believe it or not, until they finally cracked it by winning the Euros in 2008.

I have to say that they didn't really capture me in the same way the 2000's Brazilian and French sides did, nowhere near the same amount of flair, but I have to admit the Spanish side from 2008-2012 is the greatest international side I have ever seen, EVER.

 

I think the Barcelona/Real Madrid/Spain sides that dominated football in that late 2000's/early 2010's period started the era where it became less about individual skill and more about collective tactical adherence. From a viewer perspective it's not as fun to watch, but in terms of effectiveness it's really hard to argue against.

 

Actually the best analogy going. It's not for everyone but purists can appreciate it. It just completely shuts down the opposition's offence.
