Italy won a WC in 1982, the first final of my lifetime. I think France won Euro 84,the Dutch '88 and the Danes 92.

Then Brazil won USA 94, Germany Euro 96, France won France 98 and France won Euro 2000.

Japan/Korea 2002 was won by Brazil and FUCKING GREECE did Euro 2004.

In that period,' 84 to 2004, Italy didn't win anything. Beaten semi-finalists and beaten Finalists, twice.

They won Germany 2006 and lost the final of Poland /Ukraine 2012 to a rampant Spain.

They've been absolute dogshit ever ever since. Like really bad.

France are probably the 2nd best team of my life. I said Argentina but it's France.

Then it's between Argentina and Brazil.

The best team of my life to never win anything is England. No question. Two finals, three World Semi Finals, one Euro Semi Final.

 

Like Richie Sadlier said on Irish TV, Argentina lived off moments. I really think they used up their moments vs England and Egypt.

Euro 96 was the first time I was properly invested, and what a tournament to start with. We were literally a millimetre away from winning that semi, and I am as sure as can be that we would have beaten the Czech Republic in the final.

Ever since then it's felt like a chasing the dragon thing. These last few tournaments have been the best hits I've had in ages if we want to run with that analogy. I really felt this time was different. I'm beyond infuriated that he didn't try to stick with the momentum we'd just EARNED on Wednesday, and instead just gave it up.

Futbol was never a thing on the island for years. It began picking up some in popularity in 2010 after South Africa World Cup but still never the number 1 sport. For PR, baseball will always be king.

When the old joke about how it's ridiculous to compare football to religion because football is more important i got a personal introduction.

 

I think you were the first Spanish football fan I spoke to, to be honest, at least in any kind of depth all those years ago! I remember way back discussing Deportivo La Coruna when they actually used to be good and were challenging for trophies.

 

The 'Big 3' is always considered Pele, Maradona and Messi. Whist I broadly agree, is there a particular reason R9 Ronaldo isn't on that list? He's won a world cup, scored in a final, broke records etc

 

I know its kinda football blasphemy to say this, but Maradona's stats and success dont really hold up to Messi and Pele. I think so much of his legend revolves around 86.

Club wise, Messi elevated Barca to the best team in the world and Pele elevated Santos to the best team in the World. Maradona didnt have the same transformative effect at Napoli.

Somewhat controversial to say this, but I'm not even sure if Maradona was better than Zico. If he was it wasnt by much.

I say that to say: I think R9 could very well be ranked over him.

 

Man, till this day I haven’t seen a striker eclipse R9. You know me. I love Eto’o, Henry, Villa, Ibra, Schev, etc. The level he had before the knee injuries was absolutely UNFAIR.

I know what it's like to be like that. You wake up in the morning and you've got this feeling that "somethings wrong, somethings wrong.... Oh yes, the game" and it takes ages to really subside and leave you.

You need a few good wins to get it out of your system.

I've been increasingly of the opinion that football is bullshit apart from international football.

Yes there was a loaaaad of bullshit in this world cup but it kind of gets aired and we eventually got the right result.

Messi got his plaudits but didn't win anything. We got to see just how venal and corrupting people like Trump and Infantino and that whole mob are, like with Iran and that Red Card thing.

Enzo Fernandez being sent off. Teams playing football and getting rewarded for it.

No terror incidents at this World Cup. It's almost like the people organizing the tournament are also organizing terror.

So on the whole I found it very illuminating and rewarding.



Are we having a good time?

The Argentinian Rugby team are just as bad as the football team. Some things will never change.

 

RIP Kevin Keegan, genuinely bummed me out hearing that.

 

That's what i've been thinking about as well.

As the teams don't spend nearly as much time together like they do at club level the quality of play is a notch below.

What i like about it most though is players can't be bought. A wealthy nation can't just look at a good player on another team and and tempt them away with a more lucrative contract. It's just one tournament. Assemble the best squad you possibly can, make a game plan and go for it.

No making up for poor play next week, no transfer window. Lay it on the line.

 

All of this plus the Punditry is better because guys are often truly neutral. Guys call Egypt vs Argentina better than they call Chelsea vs Wolves because Wolves are nobody. It's a small thing but it's there.

RIP Keegan. I've watched plenty of highlights of him through the years. He was superb. One of the best forwards England ever had.
