My guess is that he was genuinely a better person when he was older, but still had a lot more of that ugly side to him than he let off. He changed somewhat (everyone does), but not as much as his image changed. It seemed to show at times during broadcasts or fights. At one point rounds of the Stewart fight, he coldly says to his corner “shut up, say what you got to say and be done”
