Shakur Stevenson thinks Floyd is too modern and advanced for the 147 lb version of SRR and would win comfortably. Anyone agree?

Robinson had about 200 pro fights and retired in 1965, not 1895.

 

For these young guys, anybody who fought pre-1990 is a caveman.

It dont take a goddamn rocket scientist to figure out that Floyd, who had his hands full with a washed up Oscar, aint beating Robinson.

Floyd doesn't beat Gavilan, let alone Robinson.

I got $500 that says Shakur doesn't know who Kid Gavilan is.

 

I think "athlete evolution" is overrated as a whole, but what's apparent is its more applicable to certain sports.

If you wanna tell me that Rod Laver couldn't compete with the tennis stars today, thats fine, and its probably true.

Boxing is different.

Boxing hasnt really evolved from Robinson's era at the ELITE level. Not talent wise nor skill wise.

Nobody can sit up here with a straight face and tell me that Ryan is more "advanced" than Jose Napoles, or Devin Haney is more "advanced" than Luis Rodriguez.

If anything, skill has REGRESSED, because the real teachers are dead.

 

Shakur said he didn't realize Hagler was such a great fighter. Odds are "The Keed" would be totally new to him.

 

I don't really like comparing eras and then different sports combined together, just too many different variables. It's not hard to provide examples where something is better or worse whichever way you want to go. We might all have rose colored glasses from time to time but boxing stands alone for me in an entire sport i've actually paid attention to over the years as one which has regressed. The only thing that is brought up continually is how guys are bigger, modern conditioning, etc. That applies much better to other sports than boxing. For boxing it's basically just it's newer therefore ought to be better somehow. Has to be. The guys saying that haven't been watching much. It just sounds right like things evolve or whatever.

This is not technology like comparing a computer or a TV years ago. Of course they will get faster/lighter or whatever. Even though i appreciate nice cars I've never cared for motor sports. Beyond F1, just look at sports cars designed for the public. Around a track no car remotely in the same class is going to lose to one decades older. It's irrelevant though, none of the cars themselves are not talented. It's only technology and what the rules are.

I don't buy that all the best fighters are in other sports and so on, but i believe there is certainly something to it. Maybe it doesn't "deserve" to be there, but if boxing had the same level of mainstream popularity as it once did and remained that way to the present it would be more comparable to other sports.

 

Not every athlete is a historian but how as a pro fighter do you now know that? It's Marvin Hagler, not Stanley Ketchel.
