Exactly how bad of an interpreter is Ray Torres?

Mi espanol es mal.

 

He's a very good interpreter. He correctly interpreted Mayorga's words in the Forrest fight as "That ****** hit hard".

 

We need Rafyc66's Ray Torres impressions ::

unless you speak Spanish, I'm not sure how you can claim him to be a good interpreter.

I don't know a single Spanish-speaking person who ever claimed Torres does a good job. My wife laughs every time he does a broadcast, and she's usually half-asleep for most of them.

normally, I'd laugh, but the only thing funny on the subject of Ray Torres' translating... is Ray Torres' translating.

 

But Jake, you have to admit he is funny.

I like him for the simple fact he tries to capture the essence and emotions of the cornermen. Other translators just translate in a monotonous, deadpan delivery.

Torres captures feeling, how cares if he gets the odd word wrong ::

BTW - the translation he offered for Mayorga-Forrest II was "Hey that black guy, he hits hard!"

It suggested that Mayorga used a more derogatory term in Spanish.

Here's exactly what he said:

The literal translation is: that black guy sticks very hard. In boxing terms, it's "that black guy hits very hard."

When Hispanics want to call a brother a n1gg3r (in a derogatory sense), they won't use an obvious term like "negro."

 

Yeah I listened and didn't hear Mayorga utter the spanish "M word".

It cracks me up every time! It's not the words so much as the tone he says it with.. it is always said in a way that it's like the trainer telling the fighter is talking like the fighter is an idiot.. ::

I don't think Torres is as bad as they say. His tone is what is absurd. Anyway, sometines he has to clean up what is said. It is funny that some of you know three words of Spanish or "your wife" or "your friend" or some other expert says something and youmake it proof positive for an anti-Torres rant. I thought Mayorga said in the corner that the black guy had hard hair. He makes mistakes, but sometimes he is just cleaning it up.


Not that it was Torres, but Jose Luis Castillo was asked if Chico Corrales was a hypocrite for suing him and then not making weight himself. Incidently. this was before Diego died. Castillo said "Chingue su madre." Literally, fuck his mother. The translator said "Forget that guy, I don't want to talk about him. I guess he sucks too

As for my Spanish, I post on Spanish boxing boards and posted here for a few days entirely in Spanish and Donnybrook and I had long conversations in Spanish. I am not fluent in speech, but I understand it a great deal. Torres is decent. He just sounds stupid.

 

True... except we have yet to find the dialect that Ray actually speaks/understands ::

i've been here for almost 4 years, and still don't have a fuckin' clue what anyone's talking about. I'm sure the same is true in reverse
