FightBeat.com's Miguel Salazar has just learned through a reliable source that after Gamboa somewhat dismal performance on HBO's March 17 triple-header, everyone in Team Gamboa has been fired.

    Wow. That was quick.

    Great job getting this information.

Unless the Team was IN the Ring HELPING Gamboa Look "Dismal", REED Isn't Sure WHY a FIRING was Necessary...

Its what I call a "Gil Clancy" moment. Gil forgot to tell Oscar he needed the 12th vs Tito. Thus, Gil had to go.:rolleyes::rolleyes::laughing:

Well you didn't think it was Oscars fault, did you?

  5. Mitchell Kane

Yeah, but Oscar also had a Robert Alcazar moment, a Manny Steward moment, a Jesus Rivero moment, a Freddie Roach moment...and briefly a Floyd Mayweather Sr. moment.

It's not like last night was just a tactical mistake. Gamboa does need to get better defensively. He was an amateur for a long time and is still early in his career...it might be the right time to make changes, if they're done correctly.

Oh, no doubt about it, Oscar has had his moments.

But nobody wraps hands like Alcazar:nono::laughing::rolleyes:

On HBO in 10th fight, new management after 10th pro fight:lol:

Jiminez is a big step for a 10 fight fighter! What did they expect, a first round KO and then the crowd throwing Gamboa flowers?

My bad, that's exactly what they expected.

WTF? He only lost 1 round, given that it was a step up in class, I thought he looked pretty good.

His defense is shit yeah, but other than that he was good.

I can´t remember Tam saying Gamboa was dropped in sparring, and his corner repeatedly told Gamboa to keep his hands up. Gamboa is just to eager to impressive. He could have worked the body more, moved in and out faster and just use his superior handspeed to break down Jimenez. He has so many physical tools, he doesn´t need to be too cute. It was a learning experience HOPEFULLY.
It´s probably difficult for any trainer to get through to a "cocky" fighter like Gamboa, who has so much confidence in his skills and feels invincible.

It reminds me of Naz. Firing his corner as soon as he got too "good for them"...well we all know how that panned out.

All I can say is if this was his wake-up call as a fighter, it's not as bad as the one Panchito Bojado got.

We´ll know it, when he keeps his hand up more and isn´t as reckless in the future. Otherwise his wake-up call will come, when he steps up in competition again.

I'd assume last night delayed that for at least a little while.

He's still in his mid 20's and has been pro for about a year...there's no need to rush him into anything.

    hmm, sounds hasty....

....hard to know whether it is a good or bad thing, but i hope Gamboa isn't blaming his performance entirely on his team. He has to take responsibility himself in order to improve.

    Exactly...

When YOU Decide to Fight w/Your Hands DOWN & Get CLIPPED as a Result, it's NOT your Trainer's Fault...

So if Gamboa Fights THE SAME Way Henceforth, it's NOT his Former Trainers Fault...

Yep, he's no spring chicken for a Lightweight. Hell, he's 2-3 years older then Juan Diaz. I'd go so far as to say he's in his prime right now. He's not going to get better people. He might get smarter but not better.

The listings I've seen have him 26...but since he's Cuban, he might be 36.

Either way, the talk out of his camp was a bit much. I'm not talking about Jimenez, I mean the talk of him fighting for a title by the end of the year...because he's already in the top 10.

Last night was the first time he's gone 10 rounds (the first time past 6).

Whatever his age, he's only been a pro for 13 months.

i don't think it was him firing his team, gamboa is not that kind of guy. it was probably his promoter who did it. it was his promoter who got him the trainer too.

Is there any word whether there are still plans for Gamboa to fight Jose Rojas on the June 27th ESPN2 card in Las Vegas?

Gamboa is showy poo. He's got nice hands, shows a very good skillset, but with his apparent lack of orthodoxy, he will find himself in a bad way sooner rather than later.

If I were Team Gamboa, I would keep him away from big punchers, because he's got "JUST GOT KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT" written in his future.

I dont think Gamboa will have a career such as a Diosbelys Hurtado. Then again at this point I dont think he can be taught to keep his gloves up either.

Fighters almost always make the trainer. Gamboa should do whatever he believes will be best for him.
    .
That said, I didn't think his training was off for the fight. Jimenez could take his punches.
    .
Gamboa looked less in several ways than I was expecting, but he looked better in one way that is at least as important and maybe more--his stamina was spectacular for a 9-0 fighter who hadn't been past 6 rds.

I didn't think much of Gamboa the other night. He's flashy, but as REED said his trainers aren't the ones to blame for his keeping his hands down.

Unless you've got unbelievable speed, you can't get away with that crap. I've always said I don't mind prospects getting hit it's HOW they get hit. He slipped his fair share of shots, but when I see a kid getting clipped flush on the chin without rolling with the shot to lessen the blow, I'm cautious of him.

Not to mention all the times he walked straight in, chin high. That's going to get him clipped. Between he and Andre Berto, I can't decide which will get KO'd sooner.

As soon as either fights a guy who can take it and punch back, they're in for a long night. Probably fights they can stink out and win, but it'll forever alter their fighting styles.

Apaarently Öner has hired Orlando Cuellar as the new trainer. After Elio Rojas on ESPN in June, they are talking about Valero. Two fighters who are in love with themselves and in search for spectacular performances. Me thinks they can hurt each other, since Valero punches harder, but also has a weaker chin.

I think Öner needs to take a page out of the textbook called "German guidelines to a paper championship" and get Gamboa in with one of those shitty champs, whether it is Arthur or Baloyi. He can always fight Valero next year.

    Agreed.

It doesn't even have to be a champ. My God, how many fights has he had, 10? Based on his last one he still needs tweaking. Cueller's gonna need some time - not too much time with this talent but enough to take him to that next level. I don't know what the rush is.
