I never meant to say he put on just as good a performance as Denzel but that it just seemed like he was trying to.

In a hot dog eating contest maybe. Not as an actor.

Honestly none was saying Whitaker was an elite actor until Last King Of Scotland.

But Denzel's acting in Malcolm X, Mo Better Blues, Crimson Tide, and Training Day shit ALL OVER anything Whitaker's fat, drooping eyed ass could ever do!

Yeah, but how fair is that? How many big budget well written movies has Whitaker had the opportunity to headline in. I don't think the void between them is that big and in all honesty I'm not even sure if Denzel is the definite better actor. I think it's arguable.

Not true. Way back when, people were always saying great stuff about him. He just wasn't in any good movies like that.

I remember Siskel(sp) and Ebert saying the only reason to watch Ghost Dog was because WHitaker was so good.

Whitaker was praised around the time Bloodsport came out and not for that role.

:nono: I agree that he plays the same character in every movie, but regardless,
American Gangster, Inside Man, and Man on Fire were all very good movies.

Man On Fire is the last movie he was in that was even somewhat notable IMO.

Gangster and especially Inside Man were both cliched rehashes of previous work.

Yeah. I liked it. It's a cool new angle for a monster movie. It's worth watching once but the rewatch value is low.

Agreed, although the first 30 minutes is garbage. Good twist on a pretty generic genre. Think Blair Witch only with a big ass monster and a much higher budget

    5/10

Just came across as Training Day 1.5, without the solid supporting role of Ethan Hawke. Dissapointing as hell. Whitaker's character was worthless and Keanu Reeves' character had some potential, but was too busy being mired in cliche's to get out of first gear.

I was horrified to learn that one of my favourite authors (James Ellroy) co-wrote this. WTF was he thinking.

The Strangers: First half was very suspenseful, and had the potential to be a great horror movie, then it fell off a bit towards the end(like most movies today). Still its a decent horror/suspense movie. 7/10

BTW - my real question about this movie is, is it REALLY based on true events, or is that bullshit?

    Does anyone know for sure?

Man On Fire was very good.

Inside Man was good, but not great. And tbh, Denzel didnt contribute all that much to that movie. Clive Owen stole the show.

And American Gangster was overrated trash!

    Yes, there were a combination of true life events;

    1. From an event in film director Bryan Bertino's, childhood. A stranger came to his home asking for someone. Later, he found out that empty homes in the neighborhood had been robbed. (original inspiration)

    2. It is also inspired by the events of the Charles Manson murders.

    3. It also inspired by "Cabin 28 Murders" in Keddie ,Ca on April, 11th, 1981 in which 4 people were brutally murdered.

    Hence based on "True Events"

It was supposedly based on the Keddie cabin murders, but here's what wikipedia says on the subject:

"The movie is inspired by an event from the director, Bryan Bertino's, childhood. A stranger came to his home asking for someone. Later, he found out that empty homes in the neighborhood had been robbed. With that memory in mind, Bertino created this, his debut screenplay. The screenplay is also inspired by the events of the Charles Manson murders. Many people also speculated that it was inspired by the murders that took place in Cabin #28 at Keddie Resort, where three people were found tied up, stabbed, bludgeoned by a hammer."

Here's a description of the Keddie case. Very disturbing:

"On April 11, 1981, at the Keddie Resort, three grisly murders were committed in cabin #28. Glenna Sharp, 36, her 15 year old son John and 17 year old family friend Dana Wingate were bludgeoned and stabbed by assailants still unidentified. Sharp's 13 year old daughter Tina was missing from the scene when the bodies were discovered by 14 year old Sheila Sharp the following morning. Sheila had been spending the night with a friend. Glenna Sharp's two youngest boys and another boy, toddlers at the time, had been spared and were found safe in another room of the cabin. Ultimately, Tina Sharp's remains were discovered three years later when a bottle digger found parts of her remains 95 miles away near a water fall. In the years following the murders the Keddie Resort fell into disrepair and most buildings were condemned. Many around the area talked of the cabin being haunted. Cabin #28 was eventually razed in the summer of 2004, either to deter ghost hunters or to make way for a new generation of Keddie Resort buildings. The case remains unsolved. Some say that the site is still haunted and that the killers (despite being elderly) are still rampant in the area."

I haven't seen The Strangers yet, so maybe you could tell me if it has any real resemblence to the Keddie murders.
