NEW YORK (June 5, 2008) – Carlos Quintana defends his WBO welterweight belt against the man he just captured it from in convincing fashion, then undefeated Paul Williams this Saturday, June 7 on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING (9 p.m. ET/PT delayed on the west coast).

So who will triumph in the highly anticipated rematch? The experts predict it to be very close.

Of the 40 boxing media writers who participated in a SHOWTIME Prediction Poll, 24 picked Williams to earn his title back while 16 chose Quintana to successfully defend.

Here’s how they see the first of two world title fights as part of a World Championship Doubleheader on SHOWTIME from Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.:

It seems like a number of people picking Williams are doing so because they think he'll use his jab more effectively.

I'm not sure what in Williams' career suggests he will do this. I guess it's just a belief that the loss got it through his head that he needs to throw it more and so he will.

BTW, reading that list, I still saw more experts picking Quintana.

is williams suddenly going to have more handspeed, accuracy and fluidity?

The reason I'm leaning Williams is that I can't imagine him getting hit as easily and as often by Quintana's looping pot shots. Quintana was in a zone and I'm assuming he won't be able to get back into it in the rematch. And if there is a letdown in Quintana, Williams' punch volume should be the difference in scoring.

Are we back in February? Last time I checked Williams got clowned thoroughly.

People just can't overlook Williams physical advantages. They seem to forget he doesn't really use them and that he always had this weak pawing jab. I think he can win, but it will be hard, Quintana is tricky and Williams doesn't punch hard enough to get him out of there. Skills for Skills, Quintana has the upper hand. At the end of the day, that's usually what determines the winner.

    Agreed.

I could certainly see Williams winning but it seems like anyone who is going with Williams is doing so because of what he can potentially do.

You just can't ignore the first fight. It's not like Williams took the fight on two days notice and came in with a broken leg.

He got straight out-boxed. It seems like some people are choosing to forget the first fight somehow didn't happen.

I like Paul, and would like to see him win saturday, but I dont think he will.

Same here. There seems to be more "upside" to a Williams win, but i'm still going with Quintana.

Maybe he'll realize that upside by moving up.

He was carefully protected before the Margarito fight...if he'd fought a higher class of opponent it might not have come to this point.

That could be partly true, but i don't think it's all about quality of opposition. I think Quintana just provides skills and a fighting style that cause trouble for him.

Everyone keeps saying Williams can do better, but honestly Quintana can as well. He seemed a bit hesitant at times, probably still trying a bit to get his confidence back after the Cotto loss. This time I expected Quintana fight more calm, and confident, which could improve his stamina. And Quintana's stamina was the ONLY reason why he didnt shut Williams out.

But Mitchell was getting through with some similar punches, even though he was basically done. Matthysse had him hurt a couple times in their fight, as well.

The signs that he needed to work on things were there well before Quintana.

you guys better enjoy williams while you can. I envision a short run at the top for him.

True, but what i mean by upside to a Williams win, was about the aftermath not the fight itself.

He's a more entertaining fighter and possible matchups out there are more interesting with him there than Quintana.

Yeah I cant envision Williams being a top fighter for long either. Its not like he has overwhelming talent, or skill. He's not a big puncher, doesnt have blazing handspeed, and his boxing skill and defense leave alot to be desired. What he has going for him is that he's tall, with a high workrate and a good chin.

THe last point is why he wont be around long. He relies on his chin way too much. None of the other things will hold him back, besides that.

I know what you meant. Even if he losses, he could still make for interesting fights at 154, since I cant see him staying at 147 any longer.

Maybe down the line, he could provide a test to Kirkland or Angulo.

Yeah, I think if he ever faced a REAL puncher he'd be fucked! Thats why many people(me included) thought Cintron woulda been a hella dangerous fight for him.

Margarito and Matyse are good punchers and they didn't hurt him at all. I think he is better against punchers then technical boxers. He can get off punches easier and he isn't good at cutting off the ring.

Matthyse clearly hurt Williams on more than one occasion.

Sharmba Mitchell hurt him too, if I remember correctly.

Wow i seriously don't remember him hurting him. Im gonna have to find the tape. I do remember the fight being very good.

Yeah, Matthysse hurt him to the body and head. Nothing serious though. As Paul put it after the fight "not hurt...but stung." Mitchell didn't really hurt him, but he had no problem getting off on him...

I never Angulo was better than Margarito RIGHT NOW. I said he has the potential to be better than Phony in the future.

I don't see it and I don't get the consistent Margarito bashing. Makes me wonder what kind of fan you are, bro.

I dont see why not. Tony after 13 fights definitely wasnt as good as Angulo.

I just think Margarito has been consistently overrated. I respect the fact that he has a crowd pleasing style, but dont consider him as good as some of his fans do.

If he beats Cotto*which I doubt), I'll eat crow and admit I was wrong about him.

When I look at Angulo, I don't see a fighter who's going to get a whole lot better. He doesn't have the raw physical tools that Margarito has, IMO.

Toni may or may not be overrated, but I don't see why that means the guy is a "Phony". To quote Mark Jackson, "X, you're better than that."
