Assuming Floyd's "retirement" is real... will he go down as greater than Roy?

Assuming just for a second that Floyd never fights again(doubtful), does his body of work at this point surpass the man who he inherited the #1 P4P from, RJ?

His defining fights are already better than Roy's, or at least he's had more defining fights than Roy. Unless Roy can turn back the clock and beat tarver, johnson and say, dawson...

    He inhereted it from Bernard.

It's hard to say. Both were on top for rougly 10 years.

    RJJ>fLOYD in every sense.

RJJ was also a more likeabale guy, though that has nothing to do with it, and is not hard to accomplish, though I had to mention it.

    It's Hard to Say...

Floyd's Resume is Probably SLIGHTLY Better than Roy's, but THE WAY Floyd Won PALES N Comparison 2 THE WAY Roy Consistently Won...

Historically, Floyd's Body of Work MIGHT B "Greater", but Roy's is More IMPRESSIVE N REED's Opinion...Also, N a Head to Head, MYTHICAL Matchup, REED would Pick Roy to BEAT Floyd 8 Out of 10 Times...

Like Haymaker Said, if Roy can AVENGE his Losses or even Beat Calzaghe, that'll DECISIVELY Tilt the Scales BACK to Roy's Side...

Floyd Could Do HIMSELF a Favor by TAKING Miguel Cotto's "0" from him...

Both when on top of their game were pretty untouchable. But Roy has that bad loss against Montell Griffin in his prime. That hurts him. Then again Roy did something incredible by capturing the heavyweight title, albeit fighting a fucking bum.

So in the end I think it will be very close. Roy did beat a #1 p4p ,but he was also brutally KO'd twice. I'll give the edge to Mayweather.

Yeah I dont think ANYBODY will debate that. Roy is a MUCH more likeable person. The only thing about Roy's personality people ever complained about was his ego, which was more amusing than anything else. But anybody could tell that under the ego, Roy's a good guy. He NEVER came off as of a ass as Floyd does.

Also, resume aside, I think prime for prime, Jones was a better fighter.

I'll always be MUCH more of a Roy fan, than a Floyd fan.

A bullshit DQ which was avenged by a first round KO. I dont think the Griffin loss will mean much on Roy's resume when all is said and done, considering what happened in thier rematch.

P4P Roy stops PBF 10 out of 10 times. I think the 154 pound Roy that started his career goes life and death with PBF.

However, career wise, I give the edge to Roy.

to me, roy was beautiful to watch. The way he displayed his godly skills was something surreal. Floyd is more like the crafty fighter, while roy was the best thing to come since sugar ray leonard, in terms of pure talent and athleticism.

    No.

The way Roy dominated his opposition was insane, and I still think dominating Ruiz at heavyweight is more impressive than anything Floyd has done.

It's certainly more impressive than winning a 7-5 decision over part time boxing promoter Oscar.

No and I don't think it's really close.

I wouldn't put Mayweather above Pernell Whitaker, either.

Would you put Jones above Whitaker?

    I don't think I would either.

I'd probably say Whitaker, then Jones, then Mayweather.

I would argue that the fact he lost by DQ and won the return the way he did actually enhances Roy's legacy.

Agreed. Jones was never legitimately beaten in his prime. He didnt lose legitmately til he was 35, and had come back down in weight.

It can be argued however that Floyd lost the first Castillo fight, which was in Floyd's prime.

Roy never had a win that in his prime that was disputed.

It can also be said that Floyd never beat a fighter as good as Toney, much less shut them out the way Roy did.

All due respect to the late Chico, but Chico couldnt carry Toney's spit bucket.

Tough too say. Certainly not able to be answered within the confines of an internet forum, the day after his retirement.

    Hard to say.
If PBF retires now, he would have retired with a LOT of unfinished business. He has the opportunity to become a great fighter rather than a great talent.
For me, this will hurt him.

Pretty Boy retired because he's afraid he's gonna get KTFO and lose his streak. This dude will amount to nothing outside of boxing. He's only fooling himself thinking people actually give a crap about him away from the ring.
All this Dancing with the Stars and WWE stuff has gone to his head.

    No.

Floyd imo just doesn't have the competition to exceed Jones. The only truly A-level guy he met was DLH (and a faded one at that). As much as Roy was maligned for supposedly taking on cans and no-hoppers at a certain point in his career, he did decisively beat two truly elite-level fighters, James Toney and Bernard Hopkins. That alone already trumps everything Floyd has done.

  27. Mitchell Kane

I also think Jones accomplished more above his best weights than Mayweather did.

Mayweather won a title in one more division, but he fast-tracked his way from 140-154.

Jones cleaned out most of the light heavyweight division moved up to heavyweight and moved back down and beat the number one contender in Tarver.

Exactly. Roy was FAR more crowd pleasing. Floyd's objective has always been to box. Jones in his young days went into the ring with the intention to knock guys out. But I guess thats not Floyd's fault, he wasnt blessed with the type of power Roy had. Even in his older days, I still enjoyed watching Roy fight more than Floyd.
