Not very popular I know, but where does The Iron Horse stand at 147-154? He's actually not a better fighter. His only loss was to Ouma, before Kassim burnt out and turned to crap, and even in that fight Powell didnt look bad in defeat. He fights this coming Wed. If he gets a crack at the title against Vern, I predict he'll win.
Powell's Got TALENT, but he's Not GREAT N Any Particular Area...Having Said That, He's Not BAD N Any Particular Area Either... He's VERY MUCH a "Middle of the Pack" Kind of Guy...He'll BEAT Some Guys he SHOULDN'T Beat & LOSE to Some Guys he SHOULDN'T Lose to...Perhaps @ Some Point, Powell will Win a Title of Some Sort, but REED Can't EVER See him RULING a Division.... The WORST Thing about Powell is he has NO "Wow" Factor... REED:hammert:
Him and Verno would make a good fight His opponent this Wednesday got stopped by Ian Gardner....not good :nono: The last guy he fought was a gimmie, this wednesday looks like a gimmie, does Team Powell know something we dont? :dunno:
I wouldnt say he's a fraud. None ever called him an elite fighter, I'm just saying he's pretty good. I'd probably favor him over Mora, but my GOD that would be a boring fight.
Latimore proved me wrong and walked through fire on a couple of occasions to stop the horse....in New York...:bears:
My how the mighty have fallen... I'm quite shocked that Powell lost last night. Let's get a few things out of the way first... Powell is not a NY hype job. He was hyped in the beginning of his career until his questionable performance against Cornelius Bundrage a few years back on ShoBox. Whatever hype train was rolling for him was stopped that night in Reno. I wasn't too happy about that because I felt that he was a teriffic prospect who happened to get dropped by a bonafide spoiler. Powell had every right to be hyped, though. Going into the 2000 olympic trials, he was supposed to be the Olympic team leader and their best hopes for a Gold alongside Jermain Taylor. Then he got DQ'd after a push, and his olympic hopes were dashed. He stayed in the amateurs until Powell hit the proverbial amateur wall and began losing fights (See Danny Jacobs). That's when he turned pro. Dibella signing him was considered a steal because there weren't too many people who thought he wouldn't make it. Again, I'm shocked because I thought Powell could have won a belt within the next year. I didn't expect him to be great. Basically a Roman Karmazin type of reign.
That's a definate possibility, but I'm not so sure his amateur background was THAT extensive. I think that it could possibly be all the sparring he's done over the years against bigger guys. Will Rosinski, Jaidon Codrington, Danny Jacobs, and Joe Greene to name a few....wait, he also used to spar with Wayne Braithwaite. I can't really think of too many smaller fighters in the area that he would have consistently sparred with. Funny you mentioned that though. Powell finally decided to turn pro after getting beaten handily by Jesus Gonzalez, who was probably the best amateur this country has seen in the last ten years. Gonzalez didn't make the 2004 team, and finally turned pro. Soon afterwards, it became evident that he was pretty much a shot fighter.
