Because he's been fighting fat junior middleweights, hanshaw and prince jabba, I think people are starting to forget how shot Jones is. He still has fast hands, but overall he is almost a shell of the fighter he was, and now he simply doesn't have what it takes to beat a fighter of calzaghe's caliber.
Because Jones has the speed and power to land a shot that Calzaghe doesn't see coming. I can see Calzaghe being hurt and stopped by Jones. Thats the only way these old guys are going to be able to beat Joe.
Calzaghe didn't look that good physically at light heavy against Hopkins. Frankly, I don't think he's that effective at the weight. I do think Calzaghe beats Jones, but it could be a boring, cautious fight.
I hope Joe gets stretched! I really wanna see Pavlik smash him but even washed up Roy prolly still smashes the welsh sausage lover
Calzaghe gives Roy the volume beating a la roadwarrior Johnson. Then proceeds to KHTFO and we'll hear "Don't celebrate! Roy could be hurt!" again. :atu: People will not post for a while and so on and so forth. The real fight is Joe C and Glen Johnson.
The problem is Tam, is Roy's inability nowadays to finish. Even if he does get Joe in trouble(which is possible) he'll probably let him off the hook. Roy had both Handshaw & Tito all but out, yet didnt finish them. Thats what I think will hurt him against Joe, plus the fact that he's only a spurt fighter now.
It's not only that, but even when he's punching his mind/body is going in reverse. He's so conscious of how vulnerable his chin is that it's hard for me to see him actually committing to his punches enough to hurt Calzaghe and be able to finish him off. I think Jones will continually be pushed to the ropes where he'll be covering up and throwing second. Calzaghe should win on points.
Roy didn't hurt Hanshaw till late in that fight and unlike Joe, Hanshaw was alot bigger than him. I can honestly see Roy landing uppercuts and lead left hooks and right hands at will against Calzaghe, who when he comes inside is always wide open. Can Roy win on points? Not a chance. Is Roy a better fighter? Not a chance. Can he catch Joe and turn him to moosh? I think so. Finishing him is a toughie though, I do agree there. I don't think Roy was ever really threatened by Trinidad or Hanshaw though and thus, never really ould be blamed for not giving everything in an effort to finish. I can see Calzaghe providing very real motivation for that.
He still has fast hands, without a doubt, and decent power. But Joe has brilliant recuperative powers. A good chin AND excellent recuperation. I can't see Roy beating him at this stage. He'd have to really attack Calzaghe with everything he has to stop him, otherwise Calzaghe is just going to recover, clear his head, and slap Roy silly. I just don't think Roy has it in him now to do that.
I'm dying to see this fight go down but something tells me Frank Warren will throw a wrench in the negotiations, as he's never liked Roy and would hate to lose to him in & out of the ring. B-Hop said on another site that Calzaghe's camp is worried about fighting Roy and that Jones may wait the entire summer with no answer from Warren.
Kenneth, you have MWS to thank for bumping this thread and reminding me that I had a sig bet with you too...I'm writing sigs for about half the message boards this afternoon MTF ::
LOL. It's all good. I knew I'd have to eat it if Roy lost so I prepared myself. My phone's been going off the hook since last night. And rightfully so, Mex should pull up this thread.

I'm not going to give Jones fans too much of a hard time. They obviously just had a difficult time coming to terms with the fact that Jones is not the force he once was. Any non Jones fan that picked Jones to beat Calzaghe though, is a fucking moron ::
dsimon writes: Nobody.... simpy go to your mailbox and put in the username of the people who owe you a: Pizza, a sig, money for the fight and they will get the message.
Oh, I apologise, I thought this was a messageboard where you post things for people to see and discuss and suchlike... My error MTF :dunno:
The good thing is bias probably won't affect my judgement for a LONG time - although I could've sworn my Jones pick was objectivity. For the sake of not questioning my knowledge of the sport, I'll blame it on bias. The bad thing is that there really aren't that many fighters I truly love anymore. None.
