Former Olympic silver medalist Ricardo Williams Jr. returned last night

Knocked out opponent Sebastian Hamel in one round in his first fight in just over three years.

He's still only 27.

 

145, not bad. Figured I was going to read it was a super middleweight fight. ::

Williams has talent. He showed alot of heart against El Pollo which counts for something, and if I remembered look good at the beginning of that fight until he got tired. I think the ship has already sailed on his career though. He can be a good contender, but a decent champion might be out of reach at this point.

 

Agreed. He never exactly had Floyd-like talent to begin with anyway. I always thought at best, he'd be a poor man's Sharmba Mitchell. Maybe if he really dedicates himself, he can break the top 10 at 140, but he'll never be elite.

He should fight Spaddy in a battle of dumbass southpaws who can never stay outta trouble.

He's still young enough to make something out of his career. He needs to stay very busy. At least 3-4 fights a year.:cheer:

 

Disagree. He did have Floyd-like talent in the ams and similar success.

 

I can recall him going the distance with a totally shot Terron Millet. Williams hardly had Floyd-like talent in the pros.

 

That's because he lacked Floyd-like focus in the pros. He became a millionaire before his first pro fight, and pretty much acted like a kid who was given $1 million.

Ricardo was mad talented in the amateurs. His medal round fight against that Cuban in the 2000 Olmypics is still to this day the best ammy fight I've ever seen.

Will be interesting to see what he can still accomplish. 145 for his first fight back is a positive sign. If he can trim down, 140, while loaded with solid talent, is probably a year or two away from lacking a true leader. He still has a chance to make a name for himself, just up to him to atone for his past.

 

Well Floyd is just a special fighter, and I never quite thought that of Williams. Watching his first few fights I thought he'd be very good, but not quite special. Bojado looked "special" in his first couple of fights, but of course all know what happened there.

If Williams had stayed the course in his career however, I definitely think he had the talent to have beaten the Maligaggi's and Tim Bradley's of the world that 140 has today. Hell he might even have been able to outbox Hatton. Whether or not he still can remains to be seen.

I'll be rooting for him though. I was a fan pre-prison, and I'll give him another chance. The fact that he's 27 means that its not too late, but also means that he cant fuck around.

 

agREED... and since you mentioned his name, a Williams-Bojado fight in the near future would be nice - the ultimate "loser leaves town" match

 

I gave up on Bojado after he got schooled by the corpse of Lejia. Williams would take him to school.

I feel embarassed that I once upon a time thought that Bojado would be better than Cotto.:doh:

 

Floyd Mayweather Sr. certainly wasn't the answer for him.

I doubt you were the only one. I remember all the talk early on comparing the two...discussion about who would be better and if they'd eventually meet in the pros.

The opinions seemed fairly equal.

Well, Bojado got a lot of hype from Showtime and I think that lead the discussions a bit.

But I watched Cotto live in his second pro fight and from that point on I was pretty convinced he'd be the best of the group of Olympians that included Bojado, Abdullaev, Pinto, Resto and Williams.

 

I thought Abdullaev was going to be the best of the bunch. ::

 

I thought he would get a lot farther than he did.

The Clottey loss, despite the controversy over the language/count that sprang up afterwards, was a huge disappointment in his career.

 

I think that was the fight that basically ended his career!!

He only fought once since Cotto, a loss to Kotelnik. He's done.
