NEW YORK (June 30, 2008) – Monte “Two Gunz†Barrett (34-6, 20 KO’s) was supposed to be just a step up fight for gigantic six-foot-eight heavyweight Tye “Big Sky†Fields (41-2, 37 KO’s) on Fields’ way to heavyweight success. The 37-year old Barrett had other ideas Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Fields’ hometown. <!-- m -->http://fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=21700
Barret, even though he is past it, is still somewhat of a gatekeeper for the division. He would be a good soft touch for Haye
How can there be "good" soft touches? Monte Barrett better not be in a top ten ranking after that win...because that's the level Haye said he'd fight.
"Haye is a David Telesco look-alike and we’re ready to Roy Jones him.†...it is the sort of fight David needs coming into the division, although going into the Fields fight, Barrett was not ranked in any of the leading organisations' top 15s, and beating Tye Fields won't necessarily change that when they update their rankings. For that reason, the fight is unlikely because that will go against the method in which David has picked his opponents throughout his career to this point. Haye is ranked #5 by the WBC, but Wlad is who he wants and he holds the IBF and WBO.....he'll be looking at names in their top 10-15......Kali Meehan is ranked in the top 12 for all three of the aforementioned organisations, he could be a target.
The funny thing is, as quick of a fight as it was, Barrett already had it in his head to move, clinch and do anything to avoid incoming. One freakin' shot changed the course of the fight, well that and Tye Fields' general shittiness as a prizefighter. That said, I'll take his calling out David Haye over insisting that the other champions need to step to him ASAP. A Haye fight is a reasonable follow-up to a win like this.
Speaking of how bad Fields is, I think Dan Rafael predicted "pain" for Barrett in his chat on Friday. If my memory is correct in that regard, I think that would qualify as "general shittiness as a prognosticator".
It's already known. He's a publicist, spokesperson and hype-man for whichever promoter is catering that day. I think he also said he'd prefer DLH-Trinidad II to DLH-Cotto.
When is Haye going to fight? For all his talk, I can't believe he hasn't secured an fight at HW yet. Maybe he's holding out to cash out in a fight with Wlad?
I disagree. Cotto is one of hte top fighters int he sport and DLH would easily be one of his best opponents to date, regardless of the point he's at in his career...and the same holds true for when he fought Mayweather. That makes the fight relevent, IMO, and there's nothing relevent about Felix Trinidad at this point.
That depends on what other opponents Arum would consider for Cotto later this year. I'd take Cotto-DLH over anything close to another Cotto-Gomez fight.
:crafty: Tye Fields is another example of why deeper generation white-Americans are better off persuing a different sport like Nascar, .........or better yet, not persuing a sport at all.
