Arum sounds like a jilted lover; as if there is no other place that's ever held a major fight in las vegas :nono:
Yeah, that's what doesn't make sense. Just go somewhere else and since you are earlier than the MGM fights, it would make sense for a different casino. I don't get it.
I'd imagine it'd sell better at the Mandalay Bay than it would at a place like Planet Hollywood, which was mentioned in the article, because it isn't all that experienced at promoting fights and can't hold a fight of that magnitue which means it'd go to the Thomas & Mack like Calzaghe-Hopkins. I find it interesting the date Arum was looking at was a Friday.
Sure, but there are still other casinos in las vegas. And how much will this sell? Valero is an unknown. And Pacq's base isn't that large, is it?
I missed that; thank you for pointing that out, because it makes more sense why Arum would be upset. It's simpler to go with a venue that can set up a fight on autopilot, rather than having to do all of the details yourself. This is ESPECIALLY important if you're trying to set up a PPV with your own money (that's why it would be on a Friday). Then again, my sympathy wanes because he's a promoter; it's his JOB to generate interest in a fight so it can make the most money. Heaven forbid he has to work harder to do it.
There are other casinos, but most major fights do happen at the MGM or Mandalay Bay, it's usually the smaller hotel/casinos that stage their fights at the T&M. Pac certaily doesn't bring in the numbers Hatton or DLH do, but he has a pretty dedicated Filipino fan-base that brings in some real high rollers. Personally, I'd rather have Pacquiao (and Nonito Donaire) fight in the Bay Area where there's a huge Filipino population that turns out whenever Pac comes into the area. Pacquiao's one of the few boxers that actually gets mainstream coverage in the SF Chronicle when he fights.
November 8 is on a Saturday. The article said that so and so told Dangina on Friday that the Nov 8 date wouldn't work, not that Nov 8 is a Friday
I'll say this: I find it strange that a Vegas casino would turn away ANY fight, much less a Pacquiao event in November, regardless of what else is going on in town. But for the moment, there's not even a guarantee that Valero can fight in Nevada. He's already licensed in Texas. Pac's proven to be a decent draw in Texas. San Antonio is hosting its annual marathon in mid-November. Coincidentally enough, it precedes an event called "Valero Go Kids Fitness Challenge." Where oh where besides Vegas can this fight land?
Do you think they stay with Valero if it ends up in Texas? Pac was fighting Mexicans before when he was headlining in SA...and the Solis card had a lot of Mexican fighters (including Arce). It would seem like Soto might be a more favorable opponent in SA, because he is Mexican, he's much more well known in the States and he probably got more notoriety from his last fight than if it'd ended any other way...and that fight's seemingly been discussed by Arum almost as long as Cotto-Margarito. Has there been anything on the Pacquiao-Diaz ppv #'s y et?
I ordered it and there were probably more people in attendance than ppv viewers. Ripley's even sent a film crew over to verify my purchase.
actual fans knew diaz is more ordinary than tuesday. valero actually has some ability. while I don't consider pacquaio a big ppv draw, this bout would do better than 200,000.
Valero is less known than Diaz. The ppv would be worst. As popular as Pacquiao is fans are not idiots and won't keep ordering his sparring sessions. There is a reason the Pacquiao/JMM rematch has been the most successful ppv for Pacquiao. But dont' tell that to Arum because it makes too much sense. Instead Pacquiao will follow Diaz with Soto and Valero ::
