If Jones beats Calzaghe, where does the fight rank among All Time Championship fight upsets?

Calzaghe is definately the favorite, but there seems to be a number of folks either picking Jones to win or giving him a good shot. So if Jones wins, is it a monumental upset or a mild upset?

After RJJ lost the Tarver rubber match, the concensus seemed to be that Jones was "shot". But now he is facing a more accomplished fighter than Tarver and now I am hearing from some that the "shot" Roy Jones just might pull this one out.

So what are your thoughts? If Jones wins, is it a historic upset or not?

The fact that many believe Roy is shot and still has a chance says more to how little folks think of Calzaghe.

Wins over Jones and Hopkins at this point in his career doesn't mean anything. Kinda like Marciano's KO over Joe Louis when Louis was 38.

Even the most diehard Calzaghe fans would give Joe ZERO chance at the Jones of five years ago, let alone the version of Roy we saw at 168.

You'd be surprised how many diehards think he WOULD'VE beaten Jones. Sh*t, you'd be surprised how many think he coulda beat Ruiz too!

It would be a pretty big upset, but i'm not sure about "historic".

Roy is a former pound for pound best fighter on the plaent for a number of years. Because of his experience and former status, any upset he might pull off wouldn't be as shocking and seeing an underdog who's almost unknown beating a champion.

Certainly they don't live on Planet Roy!

It'd be a big upset. More than a mild one, but less than monumental.

it would be an enormous acheivement imo. i don't know how high it ranks amongst all time upsets, but you're absolutely correct that after the third Milk Dud fight - the consensus was that Jones was finished as an elite fighter. Joe Calzaghe is univerally ranked top 5 P4P - anyone beating him at this point is a huge accomplishment let alone a guy who was written off 2 years ago.

i think it would have to qualify as an historic upset, an acheivement worthy of roberto duran - an older fighter digging deep to re-capture the old magic after going thru some tough losses and written off by nearly everyone

This fight really sucks for me, what´s more satisfying Calzaghe losing to a washed-up has been or the has been enhancing his legacy? :shit:

BTW - Roy's only chance to win this fight is by stoppage. Or if not by stoppage, then he's gonna have to put serious hurt on Joe and make him tentative. Its a possibility based on Hopkins dropping Joe. Even now Roy hits harder, and MUCH faster than Hopkins. Thats why Roy has a decent chance. But even as a die hard Roy fan, I'm picking Joe.

You've been a Roy Jones Sellout since 2003.

    Not surprising.

Yup. Sloppy Joe and Pavlik are picking on two old men who they couldnt have beaten in those guys primes.

Calz would have zero chance against a prime Roy, and Pavlik would have zero chance against a prime B-Hop.

What would be downright hilarious is if somehow Roy upset Joe AND Hopkins upsets Kelly. I know thats highly unlikely(especially the later matchup) but if it happened I'd LMAO.

man that's not funny at all. not even for a half a second. Jones over Calzaghe is one thing. But Hopkins over Pavlik? You think its hilarious imagining boxing going down the tubes with a 40 year old fighter upsetting one of the bright up and coming exciting young fighters in the sport? one of the guys that actually gives boxing a good name

Especially a boring fuck like Hopkins. I don't think there would be anything humorous about that at all. :dunno:

That would lead to Jones-Hopkins II in early 2009. Might as well put Foreman-Holmes on the undercard.

Does this also make X available for the racial draft? If so is there anybody you are interested in at the moment? Let's talk business.

You know what, I think you may be right. I think it'll be competitive. But I really see Roy having a good chance. Lets consider the facts.

1- Calzaghe is not a knockout puncher. He can' t hurt Roy with his slaps.

2- Roy even NOW is still faster with his hands.

3- Roy is very good on the inside with those short hooks and uppercuts, where Calzaghe loves to operate and leaves himself open.

If Roy can put some hurt on him early and get his respect, he can potshot him from the outside for enough rounds to get a decision.

Thats exactly how I see the fight going. A knockout would be lovely but Calzaghe will respect Roy Jones power and speed after he gets a taste of it early and fall back for the rest of the fight.

I never thought much of Calzaghe. Never.

And as diminished as Roy Jones is, I think he matches up well with Joe.

It's a style thing. As puerto rock said, he doesn't have the kind of one punch-KO power that could really unnerve and spook Roy (same for the tight, laser accuracy to deliver such a punch), doesn't have exceptionally fast hands, and, has a herky-jerky style that fits well with RJJ's counterpunching forte. Plus, physically, Roy's fought far stronger guys than Joe.
