If this was a 12 rounder Lacy would be a wrap! But he's still losing... but watch them rob Mendoza.

Lacy BARELY beat Manfredo. This isn't surprising. I picked Mendoza for the upset but oh well.

that's the first thing i mentioned in this thread was his stupid beard.

i don't know how certain it is that he would have finished Lacy considering how sloppy Mendoza is. either way - this fight i think signals the end of Lacy at the upper level... what's worse is he thinks he did something special tonight

Yeah its sad. Lacy was never that good to begin with, but pre-Calzaghe he would have stopped Mendoza.

Taylor must be creaming his pants right now.

Pre Calzaghe he struggled to beat Omar Sheika, post Calzaghe he struggled to beat Epifanio Mendoza. What has changed? :dunno:

Omar Sheika boxed and was not as reckless, fought at a more controlled pace. I see a big difference in his fights with both Pemberton than the Lacy fight.

He looked like he was going to crush Tsypko the first time before they stopped the fight, the second time he did not look good at all.

I agree with this line of thinking more... did calzaghe ruin lacy or was jeff lacy simply overrated to begin with and calzaghe just brought it to the forefront? i think certainly lacy's confidence took a dramatic nose-dive due to the one-sided loss, and that has had an effect on his subsequent performances. you had some injury issues as well. but other than that i think he is the same fighter he has always been.

Good post. I think it's obvious Calzaghe ruined Lacy, he totally outboxed him, which killed his confidence, and he punished him a lot, which probably made him age quicker.

I don't think Lacy is ruined in the "Tito ruined Vargas" sense of the word. Jeff's problems come from glaring fundamental flaws in his style, which he has always had. He simply was able to get away with these flaws in the past due to the level of his competition. And even then he had some tough fights.

Jeff Lacy's offense is fine, and he has a good chin. Those things are important tools and he has them. But he is one of the worst fighters I've ever seen that's fighting at his level in terms of distance control. He has no concept whatsoever of what distance between fighters benefits him, what distance hurts him, and how to get himself in a good position without literally charging or falling in.

This factor is also affecting his punching, since he is frequently punching from bad positions, with bad balance, and often too far away or too close to his opponent. It is stifling his offense. He desperately needs someone to help him mold the rest of his boxing style to fit his pressuring offense and power punching. Without that it's only a short matter of time before he's KO'd.

And his defense is also horrible, he doesn't like to keep the hands up, and he gets hit far too often while coming in/pulling out. If he wants to last even another year as a boxer, he needs an overhaul. He's strong, athletic, and has good heart so he's not a lost cause, but he will be, especially if he fights JT like he fought against Mendoza.

People have been praying for Lacy to make these changes for years, even when he had a huge bandwagon(Of which I was a proud member).

I've also noticed that Lacy seems to have horrible stamina when it comes to the later rounds!!

    Unquestionably...

Whilst hindsight has shown that Jeff was very much overrated to begin with, there can be no doubt at all that the sustained, 12 round beating Joe handed to him has caused him to regress hugely as a fighter.

Quite simply, some fighters are 'confidence' fighters- namely they are capable of acheiving good things whilst they remain unbeaten, but once they lose, and the manner of the loss, causes them to fade dramatically.

Jeff is clearly one of those fighters. He could quite easily have lost to both Peter Manfredo and Tyspko, but it is not that in itself which supports the 'Calzaghe ruined him' theory. It is the manner in which he fought. Both times he looked extremely cagey, almost to the point of timidity-like he didn't really want to be there at all. He looked, frankly, like shit, and it is quite clear that he is done as a top level fighter.
