Round By Round: Miguel COTTO vs. Antonio MARGARITO

Margarito was just too big and too strong. Cotto was the better boxer easily and IMO was slightly ahead on the scorecards, but the writing was on the wall by the 8th round I think. Even the rounds Cotto won, he was expending himself and Margarito just kept coming as if nothing was hitting him.


I still think Mayweather schools the hell outta Margarito.

True. I was yelling since the first round, "Cotto: attack the body! Forget his head he will not go down that way!" I counted only three occassions Cotto threw body punches and he missed two of them and the one that landed was low in the very first round. IMO opinion Cotto came with the wrong plan: going constantly to the ropes, trying to counter Margarito, ignoring completely the body and trying to land a bomb in that granite chin...wrong, wrong plan. If there is a rematch and Cotto does the opposite of what I mentioned, I am sure he can win a decision over Margarito, even stop him with a body shot to the liver.

Anyway, kudos to Margarito and I hope he and Paul Williams can fight again. Like some people pointed out about Daniel Santos: if the man that took your title (Williams) still has a belt on his waist, you cannot be called the man until you beat him. ::

Cotto got fucked up.

I couldn't hear much of what the HBo crew was saying (thankfully) but it was painfully obvious that Margarito's punches were hurting and busting up Cotto. From the looks of things, he had two swollen eyes, two cuts on one eye, possibly a cut inside his mouth (based on the blood he spit out), possibly a busted nose and jaw. I thought something was wrong with his jaw due to his not being able to bite down on his mouthpiece.

At the end of the day, Cotto simply got run over. While he was in the fight in terms of rounds, he was taking a beating. It's not unlike the Jose Luis Castillo-Juan Lazcano fight. Lazacano was even after 10 rounds, but took an incredible ass kicking...especially in the 11th and 12 th rounds.

One more thing...don't know if it has been discussed but Cotto smply quit. He took the first knee to get a blow. The second knee, did a punch land? I don't think one did. The way he got up and retreated after the second "knockdown" was a CLEAR indication that he didn't want anymore. he gave his corner a REASON to stop the fight.

Jim Lampley was absolutely disgusting tonight. All night I heard how Cotto was landing the "cleaner" punches and after each round, I'd watch his face get worse and worse. Cleaner punches, my ass. Flashier? Yes. Cleaner? Only if you count blood as dirt.

i wouldnt call a fight like that if it was my brother in the ring, it was ridiculous, obvious bias, cotto was getting pounded in the corner, and he would wait for cotto to shoot a jab and run out of there, to say anything, "cotto is able to land and create room."

then gets upset when manny correctly predicts the late round demise of cotto.
