How did you watch this early? Online or tv?
The earlier tie was harder to take, I thought.
And don't expect Koreans to get good treatment in China. I think KOR is south korea and PRK is North Korea (unless it's changed since 2004).

Yeah, he's got a good amateur style, but one that could definately work in the pros. And he's pretty fun to watch.

 

I've actually met Bradley a couple of times; he's from a part of England not too far from where I'm at and he's had a few ammy fights on the same card as my brother. He's a real nice guy, really committed to his boxing and he's a bloody good fighter- a medal chance at the games for sure, I think.

I didn't know there were two Saunders on the team. Billy Joe fought and won a decision today. I had to double check the results but yeah Bradley got the TKO.

Confusingly, they both fight at similar weights- Billy Joe is a Welter and Bradley is a light welter...::

Both are pretty useful but Billy Joe is probably the better of the two. He's ranked three in his weight class I think, and is a definite medal prospect, though he has a tough second rounder against some Cuban dude to get through next.

This Indian kid is good! They were basically reading his obituary before the fight, but he's got a former bronze medal winner chasing him around the ring.

 

Bleh. I thought they were going to show Saddam Ali live, but looks like they didn't. He'll be on between 5-8:00PM eastern.

Saw Raynell Williams. This kid has heaps of talent and he's only 19. I don't expect him to medal though. Seems like the big difference between the US boxers and everyone else is that the US kids are all counterpunchers, and that doesn't really help them on this level.

EDIT: Turns out Javier Molina had some sort of hole in his lung. Coach Campbell thinks that's the reason for his lackluster performance. A doctor said he would be fine coming into the games, but then said that it did affect his performance. Atlas thinks Molina was fine and just didn't look good.

 

i'm looking forward to jackson vs. kim. jackson is julian jackson's son. another son of julians is competiting at light heavy.

the guy that molina fought was pretty good. he was your typical awkward elusive eastern euro amateur.

u.s. amateur style just isnt very good unless your super slick and really fast.

 

He wasn't awkward. He was just better. He would pop in, throw three punches, and pop back out with Molina throwing one weak attempt.

The US style is all counterpunching, and to score in the amateurs, you have to press the action. It just doesn't work. But everyone complains about amateur style, european style, scoring, corruption...etc... In reality, it's a fight. If you're better, you're better. There's just inept people at the top of the US amateur totem pole.

I'm still loving that indian kid. He lost, but he's got a style that could do really well in the pros. He'd make a killing fighting pro in New York.

looking forward to that chinese dude zou shiming and korea's lee ok sung. i was surprised that lee came back and qualified. he was the surprise winner in the 2005 world championship.

 

Any chinese fighter will be tough to beat. The scoring is terribly in their favor. What makes it worse is that from what I've seen, they're not all that bad.


They're going to show a rematch of the world championship finals tonight. I watched it last night. A russian Kid vs. a Ukranian. It's a good matchup. The action is better the higher the talent level is in the ring. Plus, these two know eachother well, so it added to the excitement. They really didn't like eachother!

they were the finalist at featherweight in the world championship. they somehow ended up fighting each other in the first round the other day and it was an upset.

 

Yes. That was last night(Early this morning). They fought around 1:00AM.

Team USA actually gave Molina a gag order, telling him to not use any medical condition as an excuse until medical reports are confirmed. To me, it sounded like press release filler, same as how every American that failed to medal post-Roy was blatantly robbed by the system or held back by unforeseen circumstances.

 

Yeah. Jim Grey, to his credit, seemed like he was trying to get Campbell and team USA to not use injuries as an excuse by asking, "Are there any other conditions that the fighters have that have not been announced?" Campbell: "No" Grey: "Have any other fighters been seen by a doctor outside of pre-fight requirements?" Campbell: "No"

It seemed like Grey wanted to follow it up with, "Good. So no more fucking excuses coming out of you."

BTW, is it Jim Grey or Gray?


Why would they gag an athlete? Two female gymnasts have been talking about their injures throughout their events.

 

Also, no US fighter looked like they would amount to much as a pro. Estrada and Andrade look OK, but that's about it.

Every one of them should stay in the ammys, although I haven't seen much of Russell Jr. Yanez seems like he might be ready for the pros. We'll see how he does in his opener.

EDIT: The lack of talent isn't only in the US. I haven't seen much from the international fighters either. A few here and there, but no surefire talents like we've seen in the past.

He Medalled @ the 2004 Games...He's Pretty BIG for a Light Flyweight (5'6-5'7)...N Fact, the 1 Time he fought Yanez, Shimming was 119lbs or More...

It's Gonna B VERY Difficult to Beat Shimming N China...He's Quite CLEARLY the Favorite for the Gold Medal @ 106 lbs...

But Hopefully Yanez can Get it Done...

I like Yanez and Andrade. I think both will fare well in the pros. Andrade will have a greater chance at making money since he's in a higher weight division.
