Well that makes sense, seeing as how Margarito is particularly feminine in comparison to Fraud, both in style and stature.

margo's elbow was pinned to his right side all night, he sacrificed head defense to protect against those body shots.

HE took them away, not cotto

That's why I suggested that Cotto could have tried landing dead center of Margarito's body. I have seen hard jabs hurt fighters to the pit of their stomachs before. Also Gomez's elbows were also pinned to his side but Cotto made a adjustment and landed a body shot straight through the middle that hurt him badly. All I'm saying is if Cotto were to rematch Margarito he must find a way to tag the body to slow Margarito down in the later rounds or he's toast. Cotto also needs to improve stamina which is very possible.

You have to keep in mind that Cotto was at a pretty major reach disadvantage.

Yeah, seriously. Jabs to the gut can take a lot out of anyone. Especially if it's a consistent weapon.

I've been jabbed to the stomach several times and it never did shit.

Nah, I'm lying, I've never boxed a day in my life or been around those who have. I may not know what I'm talking about because to me the punch always looked so weak that I assumed it wasn't doing much damage. I may have come off looking like a moron in my initial post, but I'm used to it.

have cotto and cintron fight on the same card in AC or NY against softies, and then match them up in early 2009.

who would've thought last year that cotto and cintron would be fighting in a margarito consolation bout? haha

What's ironic is that it was Margarito who focused on the body and in my opinion this is what made the difference and exhausted Cotto to the point he couldn't continue.

Margarito was constantly throwing rights AND lefts to the body, sometimes even from a distance.

Margarito's height and length, in addition to his upper-cuts, can account for Cotto's lack of a body attack.

Cotto's approach of fighting off his back foot and backing up does not lend itself well to a body assault - not for any fighter. When he chose this fight plan, he made the conscious decision that the body attack would not be central to his offense. Instead, he thought quick and sharp combination counters would win him rounds and ultimately the fight. But Margarito got to him to hard and too often. The strategy failed.

Cotto should've fought Margarito inside and stayed low and done more of his own body work instead of trying to steal the victory ala PBF or SRL.

yeah, this seems like more along the line of what Arum would have in mind, that is if he were interested in the fight. Arum's already talking about matching Cotto against Jesus Soto-Karass for his comeback fight, which tells me that it's Margarito-Cotto II sometime in '09.

DiBella might be better off pulling a Golden Boy, and just stage his own welterweight tournament. Berto, Cintron, Quintana, Chris Smith (if he still has him), Estrada, and then have his junior welterweights (Malignaggi, Edgar Santana if he doesn't go to jail) move up and Sergio Martinez move down.

HBO can package it with Golden Boy's internal lightweight tournament to fill up every conceivable date in 2009, much to the delight of Arum and Thomas Hauser.

Good post but I don't think Cotto made a conscious decision to do that - Margarito made it for him. Cotto was all willing to go to the body in the first round, along with waving his right hand in the air after each punch he threw. That all stopped once Margarito started throwing back in earnest in the second. The body attack went right out the window.

what he should have and what he could have done are the keys

all the armchairing in the world can't substitute the fact that while Margarito is all the things people want to see lose because he just isnt esthetically pleasing to watch

WTF? Margarito is freaking awesome to watch, always has been. He doesn't look like he knows how to fight but his style is a thing of beauty.

Btw, big up. I hope all is going well for you.

well Joe (and Ike) from the general consensus of this forum prior to the Cotto we got

    slow
    flat footed
    plodder
    wrong footed
    doesn't hit THAT hard
    throws ugly wide punches
    horrible technique

    etc etc etc

it's amazing how little credit or how the credit given to Tony is with a buffer when it comes to the Cotto fight

    Cotto didnt fight his fight
    IF Cotto did this
    Cotto SHOULD HAVE
    Much respect for Tony BUT....

Ike- I am doing well my friend thanks for asking

This would be a good comeback fight for Cotto. I remember when he fought Kelson Pinto who was a big puncher, maybe not as big a Cintron, but still similar in the way his style was all about setting up bombs from a good distance and ending the fight with one big shot. Cotto looked sensational the way he lit Pinto up with compact and powerful combinations and Pinto looked akward and out of his element because all he had was those bombs which he couldn't throw accuratly at the range Cotto was attacking him. I think that Cotto Cintron would look similar to this with Cotto hurting Cintron and beating the fight out of him long before Cintron is able to find that range and timing to land his shots on Cotto.

I predict with confidence a mid rounds stoppage by Cotto if the fight does happen.

I think Cintron knocks Cotto out. Maybe even quicker and more easily than Margarito did. He has the same height advantage that Margarito did, and his defense, which is underrated by the way, would be much more effective against the more orthodox assault of Cotto than it was against Margarito's. That's why Margarito is so dangerous - he's a master at penetrating and neutralizing his opponents' defense, forcing them to fight him or take a beating. In general, his opponents elect to take a beating once they've hit him with a couple of their hardest shots to no effect. At that point, it dawns on the opponent that this will be a war of attrition, and probably one he knows he can't win. Cotto tried to. He failed.

    very true

    "his face is his defense"

    and Doble El

no way Kerm lasts long enough to stop Cotto. While yes size wise he is very similar to Tony we won't go through what Tony went through to win. This is a man whose psyche is in serious question judging not only by the first Margarito fight but also the Feliciano fight and the rematch with Tony where he started whining right around round 3.

What do you expect? It's a boxing board, of course people will continue to dissect the fights and try to figure out what each fighter could have done. The same would have happened if Cotto had won. If you want people to only say "Margarito is the greatest thing since sliced bread, we all bow down to him!", a boxing forum will disappoint you for sure. And I tell you that with all due respect. I know you're not a brainless groupie Eaner.

It's not because you were right once that all your crackpot posts will go unnoticed my friend. Cintron never once knocked anyone out as good as Cotto. Limited brawlers like Jessy Feliciano gave him all he could handle. I don't see how he could contain a boxer as good and accurate as Cotto, unless he lands some lucky punch from a distance. If you bank on that, you'll be disappointed.

um maybe a little respect for a fighter who has gotten so little, especially from this board, during his entire career. He beats a fighter, many tabbed as the best in his division, stops him, fighting his style- a style just about everyone said wouldn't be able to withstand Cotto's skill and prowess.

to me, and I have right to my opinion just like you, this past fight seemed more about what Cotto didn't do rather than what Margarito did which in effect takes away from the accomplishment so many predicted Margarito couldn't attain. This fight was the epitome of what Tony does. He grinds and for the most part had been largely successful at it.

and yes I am not some mindless groupie you should know that. I have sided against Margarito's stance on many items.

Well, I, for one, have given Margarito his dues and said that if one fighter was deserving of that kind of victory, it was him. I also said that if Cotto couldn't launch a body attack, it had more to do with Margarito's defensive position (and agression) than his own fight plan. But let me reiterate my point, you cannot ask people to not wonder what Cotto could have done to win, especially considering that he displayed a lot of skills during the first half of the fight, and only give Margarito props. This is not how message boards work, as I said earlier, the same would have happened if Cotto won. It is not as if the fight was a complete blowout from the beginning...
