As we all know, Cooney is the most hyped white hope of all time.

Could he win a title even in these days of -numerous title belts and pathetic state of the heavyweight division?

    Discuss?

He could have beaten Sammy Peter, Oleg or Wlad. The guy could crack and was tough up until the Holmes fight. After that, he was completely unfunctional because of alcholism. Cooney had a deadly left hook and he was huge.

Cooney was a pretty good fighter. Huge, incredible left hook...but a bit clumsy and too easy to hit. Plenty of other heavyweights have done more with less.

Yes. The pre-Holmes Cooney would blow by all the bums in the division today.

I agree. Today's HW division completely sucks. Cooney could had been the undisputed champ in this era, but not for long though.

    Cooney was CRAP...

Just Look @ who he LOST to...UNDERSIZED, BAD KNEE's Michael Spinks & GERIATRIC George...

Sure, Cooney Could Punch, but KO'ing 93 Year Old Norton WASN'T a Great Feat...Even Weak Chinned Earnie Shavers Did as Much...KO'ing 75 Year Old Jimmy Young & Ron Lyle WASN'T Meaningful Either...

Shit, N his PRIME, George Foreman WAXED a DEFENSIVE Minded Norton N 2 Rounds...By Comparison, Norton was LOOKING for a Place to Lay vs. Cooney...

REED Looooooooves, Admiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiires & Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeespects what the Present Day Cooney is Doing for Fighters, N Terms of their POST Fighting Careers, but that DOESN'T Enhance WHO or WHAT he was as a Fighter HIMSELF...

Gerry Cooney Beat a PLETHORA of OUTDATED "Names" N Route to his Heavyweight Title Shot...N the History of Boxing, NOBODY has Done LESS to Garner as MUCH Money as Gerry Cooney has(10 mil + for the Holmes Fight)...

Again, he was BADLY Beaten by a Blown-Up LIGHTHEAVY & Beaten even EASIER by a Guy Old Enough to B a Fucking MEET & GREETER @ Wal-Mart...

    Cooney SUCKED...

& those that BOOST his Cause CLEARLY have an AGENDA...

    Idiot.

No one said he was a great fighter. I am glad Holmes hammered him. I like Holmes better. However, you are being dishonest about losing to Spinks. Everyone knows he was a full fledged drunk when that happened.

i AM NOT PRAISING Cooney. He was big and he hit hard. He is just as good as the current crop of heavies which is not good. He was better thanyou say he was. TITO is considered a great fighter which is a joke. If someone said Cooney was great, I would "shit" on them too. Cooney was not a Peter Mcneeley. He had some ability and some talent. You are seeing racial conspiracies that don't exist. Again, I like Larry Holmes a 1million times more. I actually think calling Cooney a bum diminishes Holmes.

What are you talking about at fightbeat. I came here and got Phontap fired. I can still read his screams to this very day, lol. So, I have been at this shitty site longer than the one I am "from."

Since I'm the one who started this thread...let me weigh in with my take.

Gerry Cooney was the most overrated, unaccomplished fighter of the past 30 years.
Never beat a decent guy in his prime at all, and the only reason he hung in there as long as he did with Larry was the fact that Holmes overrespected him to a point.
A rematch woulda been over inside of five rounds.

He was big and powerful.....but also clumsy as fuck, one dimensional as hell and easy to hit. Kinda like that idiot who KO'd Vivian Harris.

Sure, with his size and punch...he woulda had a good chance against some of today's bums like Ruiz.

But overall...the guy stunk out loud.

    Dude, Cooney WAS a Bum...

U Rate a Guy Based on WHO he Beat & WHAT he Accomplished...

Again, THE BEST Guys Cooney Beat were Norton, Young & Lyle, ALL of whom were Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay PAST their Primes...Their PRIMES were Early to MID 70's, yet Cooney Fought them WELL AFTER That....

& the Best Guys Cooney Fought WAXED him...Getting PUMMELED by a Lightheavy is EMBARRASSING, yet Cooney "Acheived" that Feat...Ditto for Getting WAXED by a Bloated Up George Foreman...

Sorry, but there's NO Acceptable POSITIVE Spin to Place on Gerry Cooney, Considering How Much SHIT YOU Talk about MUCH MORE ACCOMPLISHED Fighters...

C'mon REED, Cooney was pretty inactive by the time he fought Spinks and Foreman. If I'm not mistaken, he had not fought for years before the Foreman fight.

Surely, U're Not THAT Dense, Noble???:dunno:...

From COONEY & RUIZ's Perspective's, YES, they were Taking "Garbage" Fights...But N the Cases of Spinks & Roy HOW Could those B Perceived as "Garbage" Fights???...

U ARE Aware of the SIZE DISCREPANCY, Aren't U???...

REED Knows U're a REVERSE Roy Nuthugger, but let's Keep it REAL, Dog...

    And???:dunno:

Foreman's OLDER than Cooney & Had 10 Years of INACTIVITY Himself...As for the Spinks Fight, the SIZE DIFFERENCE Negated Any Perceived "Edge" that Spinks had for Being More Active...

Guys WANT to Hype Cooney, but when U Look @ WHAT he Did & WHO he Beat, there's Really NOfuckingREASON to...

This isn't 1982 REED. Nobody here is hyping Cooney.

We're just saying he didn't suck as bad as some are saying. You'd think he was a Peter McNeeley type the way you've responded to this thread.

Foreman went on to win the championship years after he beat Cooney. I watched that fight a little while back, and I'm pretty sure Foreman was very active going in. I think it was his 20th or so comeback fight... and I don't think Cooney had really been in the ring for a couple years before they fought.

Well, there's MUCH MORE Evidence Suggesting that Cooney was OVERRATED, as Opposed to Underrated, like Ya'll R Saying...

Shit, Renaldo Snipes ALSO Gave Larry Holmes a "Tough" Fight...He even DROPPED Holmes & Could've ARGUABLY Been Awarded a TKO Victory...

Does that Make Snipes "Underrated" as Well???:dunno:...

Gerry Cooney was PERFECTLY Matched into a $10 Mil Payday that he Really DIDN'T Deserve & he was Subsequently WAXED by EVERY Good Opponent he Faced...

Is ANY of what REED just Said FALSE???

& just WHO did Foreman WIN that Championship from, Steve-Dave???....

A WEAK Chinned, Former Lightheavy, Who Whipped his Ass for EVERY Round Until Getting Caught...

& How Many DEFENSES did Forum Make???...Shit, he Arguably LOST to Axel Schultz...

REED Isn't Really Sure why Some of Ya'll R Trying to Trump Up Cooney...

Again LOOK @ his RESUME...Look @ HOW he Lost when he Stepped Up the Comp...There's MORE Accomplished Fighters who Get SHITTED on by Posters on THIS Site, yet Cooney Gets a PASS???:dunno:...

Cooney was a Left Hook & Not Much Else...
