Kimbo\Shamrock is the 2008 version of the Pride Freakshow. But it makes perfect business sense. It really is a win\win situation for EliteXC.

Let me first say, if this were being offered on PPV, I'd be shitting all over this fight. But since it's being aired on free TV, and will expose undercard fighters like Shields, Rua and Daley to what will most likely be a record audience, I'm all for it.

Is this a 'legit' fight? Of course not. Is it a fight that hardcore MMA fans are gonna embrace? Of course not. But hardcore MMA fans are already gonna be watching, because it's MMA, and free MMA at that. But this fight will draw the casual fan, the curious non fan, Kimbo's Youtube fans, Old WWF fans who remember Ken Shamrock from his days as a wrestler, etc, etc, etc.

If Kimbo wins, he will have beaten someone who a lot of non MMA fans think is still a big name in MMA, and will give Kimbo the rub. If Shamrock wins, those same fans will still think he's a top MMA fighter, and then when he gets slaughtered by Brett Rogers in his next fight, Rogers will get the rub.

I can't wait to see all the old Pride fans on Sherdog bitch and cry about this fight. You know, the same fans who loved watching Giant Silva, Butterbean, Zulu, Hong Man Choi, etc, and the same fans who are counting the seconds until Fedor fights that Judo guy in that joke of a fight.

Fixed...that last part was really uncalled for it was a good post till you typed that.Me and other MMA fans liked Pride, sure it had its freakshow fights but it also had the best fighters in the world hands down (at the time) fighting each other and none of there freakshows (There was very VERY few of those)will overshadow that.I'm starting to wonder if you even watched Pride before.....have you?

Of course I watched Pride. And freakshow fights were a part of Pride. Butterbean, Zuluzinho, Sean O'Haire, Giant Silva, Bob Sapp, etc, were all a big part of Pride. Pride had great fights, but that doesn't mean the Freakshows never happened.

Don't be such a Pride fanboy.

I liked Ken back in the day but the guy has been washed up for years now. I saw a fight on some English MMA card and he was destroyed.

The dude needs to hang them up.

Bullshit!!! I never said it never happened learn how to comprehend someones post.I said those type of fights rarely happened.the reason they put those matches on was because the Japanese people wanted it.Pride had the best fighters and the best matches at the time.I think that's something we can both agree on.

Yawn at the reaction to this....This is what, Kimbo's fourth fight? Who do you expect him to take on Tim Sylvia, ffs? This is the ten fight novice in Boxing taking on Tony Tubbs or Frans Botha or something, sure you dont wanna go out your way to watch it, but it's still a reasonable match up and a good learning fight. Or are people just mad that they've managed to make a learning fight marketable? Would you rather they dug up some no name who was no better than current Ken Shamrock and held it in a local town hall somewhere?:dunno:

The points you and TFK make have some validity. My problem is in the comparison to a UFC newcomer like Brock Lesnar. He has the same MMA experience as Kimbo and he's already been thrown in with Mir and Herring. And it looks like Lesnar's 4th fight might be against Check Kongo. Where's his 'learning' fight?

The other thing I take exception to is the idea that this matchup is some how good for recruiting new MMA fans. If the version of Shamrock that was knocked out by a jab in his last fight shows up, then new MMA viewers will think the sport is crap.

Shamrock was an utter embarassment in his last fight, but I'll acept the notion that his name helps sell a free MMA card to the casual fan.

You are the biggest pride sack swinger ever. You are just ridiculous. Always calling people UFC lovers when they don't agree with you. You are the epitome of a sherdogger.

It's Got the SAME Type of Name Recognition as Kimbo vs. Tank Abbott did...Probably even MORE...

Gary Shaw is RIDING the Kimbo Train to Financial Success & Potential Legitimacy...UFC Can AFFORD to Take the Approach they have w/Brock Lesnar, Because their Roster is Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep....Elite XC DOESN'T have that Luxury:nono:...

As Such, Expect LOTS of Kimbo, Sometimes N MISmatches...It's a NECESSARY Evil...Eventually, Shaw will Run Out of his No-Hopers & Kimbo will HAVE to Fight Somebody w/a Shot @ Beating Him...

The GOOD Thing is, Kimbo's NEVER N a Bad Fight...

Shamrock did not take a dive against Buzz Berry, as that lost cost him the chance to fight Kimbo on EliteXC's first CBS show. Trust me, everyone at EliteXC would've rather had Kimbo fight Shamrock than Thompson.

You serious? He barely got touched.

Dive might have been the wrong word, sorry. I mean he got touched and quit. I'm not suggesting he was told to sit down.

Well Lesnar's base is wrestling which in itself is the base style of MMA, and he was extremely, extremely successful within that discipline. Kimbo is a boxer who's never even boxed! he needs to learn!

Yeah, Slice's fights aren't the greatest advert for MMA but I dont really know who people are annoyed at for that? Or why? The guys a celebrity....it's basically like if Colin Farrel decided he wanted to fight - the type of people who buy a PPv like that aren't the type who would be interested in top level fighting one way or another. They just want something fun to watch on a saturday night, I doubt MMA loses anything by not impressing that type of person. Any type of publicity like that is probably a small net gain for the sport if anything.

Kimbo is rubbish. He's not appealing at all. He's going to die when he faces somebody who can fight. Somebody like Alexander Emelianenko for starters or even Alistair Overeem.
F*ck Kimbo! He's a farce. His caree will be over within a year. Or at least when Shaw puts him in there with somebody even remotely decent.

I dont hate this fight. I would to see what Ken can do when he takes Kimbo down. We know Kimbo is weak on the ground. Ken wont trade with him, so look for the takedown really quick.

  27. Hanz

Ken is small old and weak. He won't take down Kimbo. Matter of fact, when was the last time he scored a takedown on anybody?
