In terms of talent Ivan Calderon has to be considered one of the best fighters Puerto Rico produced. The question is where does he rank among the very best of Puerto Rico? If he had power he would be the most complete fighter today in my opinion.
He's very skilled, no question. Professional boxing, however, should be entertainment first. Calderon is a stinker, and I rarely say that. Those who have been posting with me for years know that I love a good defense.
I disagree. Calderon throws punches and takes risks! The problem is he dosent have power. Fans love knockouts. This and Calderon's weight class are his major problems to have the Recognition he deserves.
Did you see the fight last night? If by taking risks you mean running and holding, sometimes even walking away from the opponent, I guess he takes risks. :shit:
Here is how I rank him. 1. Wilfredo Gomez 2. Felix Trinidad 3. Wilfred Benitez 4. Hector Camacho 5. Carlos Ortiz 6. Sixto Escobar 7. Wilfredo Vazquez 8. Edwin Rosario 9. Miguel Cotto 10. Jose Torres 11. Ivan Calderon
:atu: Yeah that was pretty funny. But back the the real subject, where does Calderon Rank among PR best?
If his resume came anywhere near close to matching his talent, he'd be at the very top of the list. The problem is, it doesn't - not by a longshot. What disgusts me is that Arum controls the real estate at junior flyweight yet refuses to match his titlists up against one another. Calderon is the linear champ, but Archie Solis gets far more attention (due to his crowd pleasing style). It's going to remain that way until Arum puts then against one another - which will most likely never happen. Based on who he's fought thus far, I'm not sure he ranks among the nation's Top 10 all time. Talent counts for something, but is only one part of the equation, especiallly when most of the guys on panchy's list boast far greater wins.
Good post. I have to agree with you here. Calderon lacks quality opposition on his resume compared the the fighters mentioned. It's a real shame. Ivan want's to fight the other champions but on his recent interview he said they don't want to unify. Calderon is now thinking about moving to a higher weight class in search of better fight's.
In what way Jake? Surely you aren't suggesting he's as famous or gets more ink than Calderon, are you?
