I know I am in the minority here, but I think that this is a fucking mismatch.

Roy is bigger and stronger than Joe for sure. And even at this late stage of his career, Jones is faster, quicker and the harder puncher.

I might give Joe the edge in stamina and chin, but both are moot points here.

Bad choice for Calzaghe to take this fight as his swan song.

Jones by wide UD or surprise TKO.

How is picking a guy who is undefeated, AND a consensus top P4P guy an easy opponent?

I don't think this is a mismatch of skills, I think this is a mismatch of styles. It will be interesting to see how Roy deals with the angles and workrate. I'm guessing the first round or so might be close, but I have no problem saying that Roy will figure out Calzahge and give him a boxing lesson similar to the lesson Calzaghe gave Lacy.

If Roy wins he will do it with his speed and power....Roy of today giving Calslappy a boxing LESSON? Roy is going to catch Calslappy coming in...its up to Calslappy to stay on Roy ass all fight long...

I like Roy Jones counter punching off the ropes...for the decision...

you just said it would be a piss easy fight and Calzaghe is an old fossil ripe for the taking...a "fucking mismatch"

Roy thinks this as well, which is why he's taking the fight

  7. ILLUMINATI

    ILLUMINATI Roberto Duran

it's the other way around...Calzaghe thinks Roy is a fossil..*and he is consider how good he was in his prime*...and thats why Calslappy FINALLY decided to fight Jones...

I just think that it is a bad matchup for Joe. Better now than before......but still means Joe's "0" will go.

i'm surprised by the number of people who are giving roy a good chance of winning this fight.

calzaghe looked awful against hopkins, but who doesnt...

anyways, roy hasn't really done squat since that awful showing vs. tarver in the 3rd fight, AFTER getting KTFOed two in a row.

it would be nice to see roy win some rounds, but i highly doubt he'll win more than 3 at best.

I like Roy's chances of pulling off an upset, but Calzaghe's high output might be the deciding factor. Boy throws so many punches that he gets credit even when shit doesn't land.

Roy in his prime would have been very exciting. Roy and Hopkins might not throw enough punches to beat Calzaghe.

It's quite embbarassing that so many hardcore fans on this board are so gullible and easily manipulated....we all said at the time that the Jones-Tito fight was a pathetic, desperate & transparent attempt to restore some credibility and prestige to the eventual winner. Both fighters were walking corpses. They were both as shot as each other, both complete irrelevancies desperately hoping that a win might serve to pull the wool over enough peoples eyes for them to drink at last chance saloon one more time. Yet despite us all knowing it, Don King's plan works anyway. People buy it. Jones manages to tame Tito, an oversized fighter who in his later years relied solely on his power and had lost even that, and now suddenly he's gonna dominate a consensus p4per.:shit:

You're all idiots. This is a cash out fight for Calzaghe, nothing more. It's the equivalent of Tszyu retiring after fighting Chavez instead of fighting Mitchel & Judah.

No one's using Roy's pasting of Tito as an indicator at all. If there is one eilite fighter that Roy should be facing at this point it's Calzaghe. After watching Roy get splattered twice, I don't want to see that again. I don't think Calzaghe slaps that hard to KO him flat.

When has any fighter "shoe shined" Roy and been successful? This isn't Margarito vs Golden Johnson here. Roy will have his moments and as a fan I believe he can win.

No, Roy's shot and that's that. How do I know? Because he looked like it in 2004. Wait, what do you mean he didn't look like it in Tarver III? Well, he was scared to throw punches so that means he's shot too.

I love it. Clowning other guys on the forums who keep saying he's shot, making him a typical Calzaghe opponent. You know Joe C. would never take this fight if he thought Roy had something left. He better hope he's right.

  22. Joe King

Joe King WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

I"m all for Roy being shot but I'm all for him beating Calzaghe, so we can say that he would have destroyed him in his prime.

  23. IMDAZED

    IMDAZED Undisputed Champion

He would have toyed with him in prime regardless of what happens Nov. 8th. Although I think that much will be obvious on November 8th. Unless Roy is shot at that point.

  24. Jake

Jake WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

I don't get where Roy would've toyed with, never mind destroyed Joe in his prime. Who's the similar fighter(s) Roy faced to come to this conclusion?

  25. IMDAZED

    IMDAZED Undisputed Champion

Truth be told, the reason why I'm picking Roy over Joe NOW is because of all the elite fighters at 168-175, I think he would have the easiest time with him - in his prime and now. Calzaghe isn't the kind of lanky lefty that would give Jones problems - the ones who made him wary with one-punch KO power. PLUS, unlike other lefty's, he leaves plenty of countering opportunities.

Really, the question is, what would Joe C. do to trouble a prime Jones? A Jones who could move?

    Man, I'm done talking! Roy...November 8th...

  26. Joe King

Nobody slaps like Joe, so no one. Who has Calzaghe beat that is like Roy?:mj:

  27. Father of Muzse

    Father of Muzse Undisputed Champion

Who has Joe fought which makes you think Roy wouldn't have toyed with Joe in his prime?

    THAT is the question.

I still give Roy a good shot if Joe presses him and I seriously doubt he will. Joe walked right into that counter right by Hopkins. I see Roy countering the shit out of Joe on the inside.

  28. Jake

Jake WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

I'm not saying Joe would've beaten Roy back in the day, never mind definitively, soundly, toyed with him, dominated him, etc.

But the mistake you make is similar to oh so many who only become familiar with a fighter in recent years, which isn't always his prime. Joe during his best committed far more to his punchers and was a lot closer to being a boxer-puncher than he is today. He was also a lot faster.

What was missing was a level of opposition worth a damn. That's why nobody paid Joe much mind back in the day. But just because he's more popular today, doesn't mean he's in his prime. He's closer to it than Roy is to his prime, but both fighters are on the wrong side, and are far different from the versions they were once upon a time.

That's why I challenge you, Kenneth and others who make that claim. The moment "slapper" enters the equation, I have to question how long you've followed his career.

Prime vs. prime, I'd pick Roy, but probably in a very boring fight as both are far too respectful of the other's punching power. For Nov. 8, I'm picking Joe, but probably in a very boring fight as both are just far too respectful of the other. In other words, your typical 35+ business transaction with gloves that's littered the sport as of late.

By the same token, I can't recall Calzaghe ever having to deal with hand-speed like RJJ's. In every one of his fights I can recall, he enjoyed a significant advantage in hand-speed, whether it be via his doggy-paddle combinations, or his hit and hold assault, he was always able to beat his opponents to the punch. It will be interesting to see if he can do the same against RJJ, who if nothing else, still has very quick hands and can still throw some deadly combinations.

I think RJJ doesn't get quite the credit he deserves for his win over Hanshaw. Hanshaw was undefeated when RJJ faced him, and had the confidence of having won the super middle-weight tournament that had been held.

I guess his subsequent KO loss to Dirrell has to be taken into account, but prior to facing Jones, Hanshaw had drawn with Mendy who remains undefeated and who was a tough customer.

I give RJJ a real chance in this one, and I'll certainly be rooting for him. It'd be awesome to see Sloppy Joe lose to what most perceive as a washed up fighter.
