BoxingScene.com was informed that Jorge Barrios (47-3-1, 34 KOs) hit the scales earlier today and was heavier than his team had anticipated. Due to fears that he may not be able to make the 130-pound limit for Saturday's bout against Rocky Juarez (27-4, 19 KOs), both sides have reached an agreement to let Barrios weigh in on Friday at the limit of 133.

Barrios has to pay Juarez an undisclosed amount of money and he is not allowed to weigh above 133. Should Barrios weigh-in above 133, the fight could possibly be off. Juarez still plans to weigh-in at 130. Barrios-Juarez takes place on the undercard to Juan Diaz-Michael Katsidis at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. HBO will televise both fights.

Any mention of how much Barrios was over?

It must be a bit if they're giving him a ceiling of 133 in 24 hours.

Wow. The undisclosed amount I hope is substantial. Juarez already conceded that he was facing a significant size disadvantage and that he'd have to be smart in there if he's going to win.

Still, I think his power is enough to hurt Barrios, given how sloppy he is and how crappy his defense is. Plus, Juarez has a pretty good defense against guys coming at him.

People are down on Juarez but they have to remember that his losses came against the very best in the sport (JMM and MAB). And let's not forget that his first loss to MAB was controversial.

Did anyone (even Juarez I wonder) think he could possibly beat JMM?

Juarez isn't a top caliber fighter but you gotta give it to him. He will fight anybody.

why? because he lost to Soto, MAB and JMM? that doesn't preclude him from being top calibur.

Don't you have to beat one top calibur fighter before you are called one? Right now, he's a lightweight Fernando Vargas. I'm a Juarez fan and I hope he eventually gets that one good win. Barrios would be a good win and a great win if he KO's him.

Settle down. I used to not like Juarez at all but I've come around to appreciate him. He has no problem fighting guys who seem naturally bigger and stronger then him, he can go rounds and he can take a beating.

He's not top level, but that's ok. He is what he is.

Vargas had way more quality wins than Juarez.

Correct. He can punch a little bit, but beyond that? Crap.

Is his defense not as good for guys running away from him? Explain further please.

That's just it. I don't think it's a fair assessment. For example, the fact that he's willing to fight guys who are naturally bigger and stronger than him - doesn't that obscure people's ability to fairly evaluate how good he is, assuming it's based on his won/loss record?

My point is I think he's better than most people give him credit for when you consider the level and size of the competition he's taken on.

For example, I think it's fair to assume that he could make 126. And if he did, who's to say he wouldn't be top level there?

"He is what he is?" WTF does that mean? Can you provide an example where that isn't true? What are you trying to say with this?

He moved up to 130 for a shot at MAB and in order to maximize his earnings. Prior to that, he lost a close decision to a fighter who's turned out to be a threat to just about anyone at 130 (Soto). And then he lost to JMM, a guy that nobody's ever decisively beaten.

I just think his wanting the big fights, and to be in the spot light, and most of all to make money, has compromised what could've been a career perceived as top calibur. I just think this should be taken into account in our evaluation of Juarez.

Who would you pick between Juarez and Guererro? Can you imagine Juarez losing to Salido?

Wow. You're coming from a simplistic place, aren't you? Have you ever heard of a counter-puncher? And MAB's ability to fight off his back foot, for example, is been established, wouldn't you say?

Wow! I've never seen anybody get so worked up over the phrase "He is what he is".

In the words of the immortal Dennis Green "They are what we thought they were!".

Let's put it this way. Juarez is painfully slow for his weight class and always seems just a little less active then the guy he's fighting. He loads up too much on his punches. I don't know what he would do with Guerrero. I don't consider him an elite fighter either, but if Guerrero's chin held up he could easily outwork Juarez

I'd pick Guerrero by a mile.

My answer to your second question depends on whether or not Juarez faces the same juiced version of Salido.

  24. Joe King

True but they both have the same number of wins over elite fighters. Zero.

False. Vargas has a win over Winky Wright.

One could argue that the average Rocky Juarez fight is as boring as any in all of boxing.

Winky was P4P at the time? No. Quartey, maybe.

In hindsight Winky is a much better win then Quartey. Quartey was coming off a long layoff. Winky was already very good, we just didn't know how good at the time because he wasn't fighting on U.S. television.
