....as the fight gets closer, the more i fear for Joe.....regardless of age and wear and tear, Joe's style just doesn't match up well.... ....Calzaghe is one of, if not the most adaptable fighter out there, he will fight a very different fight to the one he fought against Hopkins, as he says, he can't rush in throwing 1000s of punches......he's got to box smart against Jones
:atu:I've had the thread open in the betting room for months now, apparently none of you talkin up Roid Jones has the stones to respond?
I don't gamble. As a matter of fact the last time I made a bet I took Caligulla's money. I felt bad for him. We went double or nothing and I allowed him to choose the team for the superbowl which I won but then I told him all he had to pay me was the money that I initially won. So I'm not much of a person that gambles. So you won't see me in the betting thread. But talkin shit I'm all for that. I'll Holla 5000
dsimon writes: I don't know who I am going with yet. The age difference is only a year though. That makes me think long and hard. I think it may be the same fight as with Hopkins, one where the judges call it but it leaves a foul taste in your mouth. Hopkins dropped and popped Joe imo, Joe slapped him back! :atu:
I'll go for calzaghe for these reasons: 1 - Mileage - roy's odometer might be equal to calzaghe in terms of age, but the last 5 years have not treated Roy well (2 KO's one of them pretty scary) while Calzaghe is the fresher of the two, having endured punishment but never been hurt the way Roy has. 2 - The Lefty factor - Roy have not responded as well to lefties as he's done against right handed boxers (Got KD by del valle, had difficulties with Harding and got KO'd and Hurt by Tarver). No wonder he haven't called Dawson out. 3 - The chin factor - Calzaghe got dropped by Hopkins, sneaky right hand that hurt Tarver too. But he's proved to have a very solid set of whiskers, while Roy's isn't a question mark anymore. Add to that Roy's loss of reflexes and his lack of disciplined defense, and he's not in a good position. Calzaghe will stop Roy in 8 rounds TKO :fightme:
here's a question......is Roy better now at 175, than he has been ever since he moved back down from heavyweight? i think he has looked increasingly more comfortable and more active in the ring....still in spurts, but not as sporadic as they were in the tarver and johnson fights
you can argue that point... but it would be countered with "look who he's fought in his last three fights." Then you consider that all three fights went the distance when the reality is that Hanshaw and a 170 lb. version of Tito had no business doing so. Ajamu was understandabe - Roy's first fight back an in search of his first win in almost three years. He's back to having fun in the ring, but again, in situations where the fights are (should be) foregone conclusions.
You are absolutely correct... He'll stop Roy from whupping his ass by not coming out for the 12th round.
I'd like to see Roy win (obviously). I had a dream that he was easiely winning the fight, got caught then was stopped. Truth be told, I like his chances early. As the fight goes on, I think Joe turns it into a stinker and looks to peck his way to a victory with Jones complying by not going after him.
dsimon writes: I don't think there is a fighter even now who can match Roy in the center of the ring. As long as Roy throws there his speed wins him the contests. Roys problems against an active fighter were accentuated in the first Tarver fight. Glencoffe later confirmed with his beating.... Jones can no longer keep guys off of him if they are not psychologically intimidated by his shenanagans in the middle of the ring. Tarver hit him on the ropes in the first fight and Glencoffe smothered him until he was exhausted. Jones will have to find a way to keep Joe off of him if he is to win. I don't know what he can do that way.... I don't see him knocking Joe out thats for sure. Ten years ago this fight is a forgone conclusion... now it is interesting.
The fact that Roy can't fight for 12 rounds is gonna cost him the fight. The 7-8 rounds he fights in he is gonna have to win big to discourage Calzaghe.
Damn Joe, Nov 2-8 has the potential to be the worst week of your life. If the odds hold up, then: Nov 2/3 - Chargers have a bye week (though considering their season so far, that might be a good thing) Nov 4 - McCain loses the election Nov 8 - Roy loses to Calzaghe
For the 1st Time, Calzaghe will Face a Guy who can BEAT him to the Punch... Moreso, Like Bernard, Roy WILL B Able to EFFECTIVELY Counter N btwn Calzaghe's Wide, Looping, Volume SLAPPING Flurries...The 1st Round of Hopkins-Calzaghe is a Precursor to How Roy-Calzaghe will Play Out... Only Roy's a BETTER Counterpuncher, Hits HARDER & Throws MORE Punches than Bernard... If Roy's LEGS Reappear for 1 Last Night, this is an EASY Fight for Him...If they DON'T, then Roy Wins a 7-5 Decision... REED:hammert:
You make pretty big conclusions from the one shot Hopkins surprised Calzaghe with. Calzaghe tried to take early command and clearly wasn't expecting it and paid the price, but he knows what to expect for against Jones. Heck, Hopkins caught him with only one truly big shot in the next 11 rounds.
