    Joe Louis fight.
    I thought I'd share a clip.
Notice the head movement, jab, hooks off the jab (sometimes triple), fluid, compact, fast, sharp, and POWERFUL combo's- all off the jab, & hardly a wasted (showy) punch. Also, he trew evry punch in the book.
Look at most of the top HWYs these days (and for yrs now)-None of them are as fluid-You never see combo's of more than 3 punches, & if they can throw a jab, RH AND a hook well, it's a miracle.
When you take all that into account you would have to say, that Louis was one of the best HWY combo punchers ever.

Did I mention body attack?-Lost art.

B4 you all exercise the standard "bum of the month", "bad chin", "small" reflex, take time to appreciate what he does, and compare it to other HWYs.
Honestly, what other HWY EVER has possesed the same cocktail of fluidity, speed, power, economy, combination punching, body attack & versaltility in their offensive arsenal?

It also helps that he was a cruiserweight by today's standards. Don't get me wrong, he had a lot of positives, but it is easier to be faster when you're lighter.

would hardly take steroids to bulk up 10lb. And I feel like I should point out that half the guys in todays top 50 could probably get to cruiserweight if they trained like athletes and lost the gut as well. Louis' size isn't as much of an issue as people make out. If Doc Brown shows up and schedules a fight against Wvlad in 4 months and Louis has access to modern training techniques he could easily come in at a hard 220 anyway.

Word. They trained different back then too, did much more (unnecessary) running for example. Back then it was heavyweight ideal to be lean, it started to change in 70s.

Also Louis, even though he was small by today's standards, was usually bigger than his opponents (exclude Carnera and Buddy Baer). That might have something to do with his punching power

I was surprised at how good Max Baer looks. It's like he does everything Louis can do, but just not quite as well.

    or

Max Baer looked like complete crap and there are 50 heavyweights today that could have gotten rid of him sooner and 250 who would have beaten him easily.

It was Dempsey in his corner. I have read the story going like this
Dempsey: Louis hasn't landed a punch on you
Baer: Then keep your eye on the ref since someone is beating me up

great stuff. His opposition was shit, but that doesn't take away from the fact that his tecnique was beautiful.

For those people that say he wouldn't be effective today, maybe you've never heard of James Toney. The boy wins based on his pure skills, that's what Louis would do but better because he's be in better shape.

actually a lot of us "get it" there was a similar thread with video on Marciano and I actually wrote the guy an email of praise for his video... It was great and made its point so well that you could hear it!! Its just that there is a group of faggots that will ultimately destroy a thread like this with their ignorance and it is frustrating. And it is always the same guys that say things like that have been said already.

Louis, despite his talents, was in some ways quite typical in that he went through a long process of developing those skills. Dempsey did the same and... this tape on Marciano shows in incredible detail that when you analyze Marciano he was quite skilled as well.

The thing is that the guys had a lot more skills back then... Cupey's analogy to Toney is apro po BTW... Toney is an example of a throwback to that era in that he can do everything well in the ring.

Its why I support the young guys fightig cans for a while. You seldom see guys with the skills that fighters once had in the ring.

And when those skills are analyzed lo and behold they are in abundance.

Where were you when I needed someone to have my back about Louis in the mythical matchup forum?

Nice video. Ike says Louis had NO talent. That statement probably tells us all we need to know.

I am one of those idiots and morons to who people refer to when somebody doesn't share their opinions. I completely agree on that many of the moves that you see on the old tapes you don't see anymore. What I don't agree on is that they prove these guys were better and would beat modern guys.

Boxing techniques have been "simplified" for some parts since then and instead of learning all possible techniques training has been concentrated on lesser variety of the most useful moves, expolsive power etc. And I think this new way of training (and fighting) while it might not look good in slo-motions, is there for a reason

    Hey dsimon.
Off course I know a lot of you "get it" The same way I know most people have seen Louis.
I'm hopeful that it's a minority here who suffer from appreciation/analytic disorder.
    I was being cheeky.
Actually, a lot of people don't get that most of the time, come to think of it though.

Louis is a better boxer than most HWYs I've seen, & I can't think of a better "pure" boxer as a HWY.
As far as "simplification" 4 the sake of "explosive power", well if by "simplification" you mean struggling to follow a jab with a cross that lands I've noticed that.
However, I certainly haven't noticed that it results in "explosive power".
Although, I've seen it in abundance from Louis.

Based on that video, John Ruiz would stop Louis in 5 rounds tops. Louis was a chinny robot.

That is one way to put it. Lennox Lewis didn't usually throw hook combinations, he rarely hit to the body etc. Instead his fighting was mostly based on jab and cross and keeping his distance. Yet, if he did fight Louis, I'd be surprised if Louis saw the 5th round. And that is my point

No doubt Louis was an incredible fighter.

Probably my second favorurite heavy to watch after Tyson.

He may not have been the hardest puncher, but technically he was one of the best.

Like Pascal says, so crisp, compact and fluid.

Something that others haven't mentioned is he was incredibly accurate too, with good timing.

And he had one of the best punch repertoire's in heavyweight history, he ahd every punch in the book and knew when to throw them, and string them together.

Also what I found funny in tapes like the latter one is that they show some real basic skills there and perform it as some mastery. "Louis takes a step back" Yeah, really impressive. "Marciano slips a jab with head movement". Never seen that happen since.

Louis with his techniques was well ahead of his time too, but as we know it is easy to look astonishing against inept opponents. In the first video Max Baer hardly threw a jab other than a lazy, pawing one and left himself wide open for counters unlike most fighters since him.

Some people just fail to see things in perspective. Yeah it's a bum ok but look at his movement and the tecnique bla bla. It STILL has to do with WHO u fight.

Tito looked like a magician against Mayorga, too. Then like someone who took up boxing a year ago against Wink.

Louis is a GREAT GREAT heavyweight of all times but today he might just be one of the guys - a Povetkin caliber fighter. With that said, a fighter like that COULD beat Wlad, but also lose to someone ordinary as Max Schmeling on a not so good day.

Not to mention the use of angles and setting up punches with footwork. What is often pointed out and alluded to by Cupey is that Toney should not be able to compete because he has these "antiquated skills" and no conditioning.... :dunno: Yet Toney is competative with the best of the new breed of heavies when Toney isn't even a heavyweight!
