"The reason why Miguel lost is because he did not have good communication with Evangelista. They had their problems and during the preparation for the fight they were not speaking. But that is now behind them, they spoke and resolved their differences. Now they are on the same page", said Arum to El Nuevo Dia.

I Don't buy this statement by Arum. The loss came because Margarito was the better man that night. But anyway what are your thought's about Cotto's return against Clottey or Berto?

Cotto versus either and Margarito-Mosley would be a good way to set up an eventual unification.

I agree but a Clottey fight will be a very tough fight for Cotto. I would love to see it. Clottey will test Cotto for sure!

See, I don't get why Arum, Cotto, or anyone else involved with Miguel Cotto has to make these kinds of statements.

You can bark all you want about communication, and hell it may even be true. But the reason Cotto lost was because he was too tired to box all 12 rounds like he did the first 6, and he could not hurt Margarito at any point in the fight. See? That was easy.

This kind of stuff makes me wary about the rematch. If this is what you're hanging your hat on for why you lost fight 1, then you may as well give away fight 2. Cotto's stamina MUST be addressed and his inability (or unwillingness) to sit down on his punches and hurt Marg MUST be addressed and his complete disregard of body attack MUST be addressed.

If Cotto goes into the rematch thinking that now he and Evangelista are tight, things will be different, he's in for a free ride to the hospital.

As far as his next fight, both opponents would be a good solid choice for Miguel. I'd like to see him in w/Clottey in that Clottey will not slow down for 12, and he has a good chin. If Miguel can definitively beat Clottey, I would be encouraged with regard to a re with Margarito.

If Cotto struggles with Clottey, then he needs more tune up fights or just forget about Maragarito. Cotto needs to get serious about his weaknesses. If he does, he has a chance to beat Maragarito.

I agree! But one thing I want to point out is Cotto's training. Everytime I see him get ready for a fight he looks too damn relaxed. I see no intesity whatsoever. I think thats a problem that must be corrected as well. But Back to the Clottey fight, I would love to see it. This fight will answer many questions!

Cotto doesn't train at the same level as he fights...in training he is loose and relax throwing every punch with perfect technique or trying to do so...in a fight he is all tense up looking to load up with every punch...

Berto would be perfect for Cotto right now. It's the easiest high profile fight out there for him. He picks up a belt and he's right back in the mix. If I were Cotto, I'd stay away from Clottey for his next fight. Maybe a couple fights down the road but not after his first loss. Clottey would be a dangerous first fight back after a loss.

Me too. I thought a really soft touch was going to be sacrificed to Cotto.

Good to see he's not wasting any time with a meaningless tune-up fight.

Even though Clottey is more proven than Berto I consider Berto a tougher fight. I also think Berto can still get better while Clottey is what he is.

He should just beat up Cintron. I think the other two possibly stop him. I don't think he will be the same fighter again.

If Clottey doesn't stop Cotto he'd likely lose a close controversial decision because of his style. The judges would give Cotto a lot of points for the shots Clottey would take on his arms. I don't think Berto beats Cotto though. People think Berto's speed would be a problem but Cotto dealt with Shane's speed rather easily and I could see him doing the same with Berto who lacks experience and any semblance of defense. Berto is a division too high IMO and I think he should drop some muscle and go to 140.

    Good post.

I think Cotto should face a far easier opponent in his next fight, however.

Berto is already one of the big names at 147 undefeated with a belt.

going down to 140 would be ridiculous. Maybe if he fails at 147 but he is in a perfect position right now for bigger fights. There is nothing waiting for him at 140 but a shot Hatton as far as big fights

Maybe, but it's better to be a winner at 140 than a loser at 147. Just ask Zab Judah how 147 worked out for his little ass. Berto can expect a similar type career if he stays there. In fact I'm calling it right now, that Berto will lose within 2 years by KO. It would be sooner but seeing as how guys fight damn near once a year I'm going with 2 years in no more than 3 fights from now.

he might lose eventually to better or bigger fighters. But The guy has campaign at 147 and won a belt at 147. Let's see what he can do against the best now. Moving down right now would make him look like a punk. Besides we still don't know how good he will be. Regardless of what you think of his potencial we will only know until he fights the best.

As far as Judah don't forget he was Undisputed champion at 147 at one time. His losses had nothing to do with weight it was his mental meltdowns.

He is only considering 140 now because he is at the end of his carreer and has no other options at 147. but he was both successful and failed at 147

I can understand him trying something at 140. But with Berto that would be retarded.

you say it would be better for him to be a winner at 140 than a loser at 147? what would that prove? That he could beat guys at 140 that he is supposed to beat? I rather watch him take on a real challenge at 147 I would respect him more for that.

I don't think Shane was an easy fight for Cotto at all. Berto would come in way better defensively in this fight because right now, he's just trying to be flashy.

Who says he's supposed to beat them? The point of weight classes is to match guys up on an even scale. I don't want to see some guy like Judah barely making 147lbs having to go up against a guy who's borderline 160lbs. Why should they have to start at a disadvantage.

I didn't say the fight was easy. Hell, had Shane pressed more or the fight been longer Cotto likely would have gotten stopped. I say he dealt with Shane's speed easily and had it nearly neutralized to the point that he appeared to be the faster puncher.

That is merely speculation and it would have been the same thing if you hadn't written it at all.

If dealing with Shane's speed means Cotto's head was snapping back, then I agree with you. Shane wasn't even using his supposed superior footspeed during the fight as he was backpedaling a lot, that may have something to do with Cotto cutting the ring off. Cotto is one of the best at cutting down the ring and cornering people.

As for hand speed, although Cotto wasn't overwhelmed, he definitely was thrown off a little but I'm guessing the Zab fight really helped him prepare for it.

As for me speculating, isn't that what forums are for? Any response in this thread is speculation.

There is no reason to think Berto can make 140. He fought higher than 147 as an am.

How exactly was Cotto thrown off? He looked completely in control of that whole fight until the last few rds when he was either getting tired or hurt. It was Cotto who was catching Mosley with unexpected shots because he was using deciptive handspeed with a good jab.

No. Forums are for stating opinions not for stating opinions as facts. There's nothing wrong with what you said, just how you presented it. Throwing in an "IMO" or "I think" changes the whole scheme. As it stands though I get your point.

Sure there is, he has a lot of muscle he can lose, he's short as all hell, and cutting weight is still legal.

There was a lot of swings in the fight. The only time Cotto looked in total control was I believe rounds 2 and 3.
