......Ray Mercer!... ....just kidding......it's Monte Barrett Barrett has been touted for a while......he wasn't considered for some time because he wasn't ranked in the top 10 for the WBC, IBF, or WBA....however, following his win against Tye Fields, he is in the WBO top 10.....so victory for Haye would move him closer to Wlad Klitschko .....what do you think?....satisfied?.....a few here were calling for this one.....
Barret still is somewhat gate-keeper of the division even though he is on bad decline (Cliff Couser disaster being a good example). However I think he will prepare well for Haye fight and if Haye walks right through him, then he does have a claim for being top-10 (considering his cruiserweight title). Barret is not a top notch opponent but much better than Mercer and probably an opponent who will make Haye look good
Monte Barrett is a GREAT Heavyweight LITMUS TEST for David Haye... REED is 1 of the Few that Would have been Fine w/Haye Going STRAIGHT to Wlad...N the Interim, U Can't Ask for a Tougher 1st Opponent than Barrett... REED:hammert:
Barret is a good test, but not the best, if you ask me. The risk with taking on Barrett is that his power carries late into fights. Sure, he'll get tired and sloppy, but he's still managed to KO guys while in that state. Plus, Barrett is a very small heavyweight. He doesn't weigh much and doesn't fight in the "heavyweight style" that we see today. The pros are that Barrett routinely finds himself in slugfests, and despite the Couser KO, has a pretty damn durable chin. The fact that he can crack and also take a punch means it will be a fun fight while it lasts. There were other options, and when you look at the realistic ones, Barrett was the best choice. Sure, I would love to have seen Haye in there with Wlad in his very first shot, but let's be serious, that was obviously not happening.
:bears::bears::bears: I just hope Monte doesn't come in for a pay day because that's what I think might happen.
Clever move by team Haye. Make it look like you might fight Mercer so when you sign to fight a complete can in Barrett it won't look so bad in comparison. This fight is :shit:
Some of ya'll R Killin REED... David Haye's UNTESTED & UNPROVEN @ Heavy, Fellas...Did U HONESTLY Expect him to Make a Fight w/Povetkin, Tony Thompson, John Ruiz or Somebody of that Ilk N his FIRST Fight???... Barrett's a GOOD Opponent for what this Fight REPRESENTS,ie., the BEGINNING of Haye as a Heavy... REED:hammert:
He said he wanted Klitschko...so he found a guy Klit used as a yo-yo years ago. And this isn't his first heavyweight fight.
The problem with this is Haye talked so much shit about the HW division and stalked and disrespected Wlad only to end up fighting Barrett. Do you think beating Barrett should give Haye a shot at Wlad? I don't. If this is the path he wants to take he's going to need to do more before he gets a shot at a title. After all the talk about fighting a top ten guy, he chooses Barrett? A guy who is barely top ten and only by one sanctioning body.
All truth. This fight is pure trash. Honestly, Monte can't fight at all anymore. I don't care that he knocked out Tye Fields.
He might still knock Haye out. I hope he does. Haye is full of shit and I can't stand the guy already.
Monte couldn't even go the distance with Valuev. Everyone with a pulse goes the distance with Valuev. And since then he has been stopped in two by Couser. ::
I'd have a problem w/ this fight if it were on HBO. Since it's not, then I couldn't care less who he fights. The network he's fighting on set the terms for opponent approval. Team Haye played by the rules. This is what happens when networks invest into fighters instead of fights.
....it was never on the cards......it was Mercer's people and them only who were banging the drum for that fight Let's not forget Haye has had a career as a cruiserweight world champ.....champions are jumping up divisions all the time and going straight in with the champ.......with the heavyweight division being so weak, and having a distinct lack of appetising match-ups....then why shouldn't Haye have a fast track to the title??! Barrett has looked and sounded more motivated recently....remember the trouble he gave Mesi and the victory vs Guinn......he's been in this position before and he'll believe he can upset the new kid on the block
Obviously there are better opponents but Barret is at least a decent choice. Hopefully Monte doesn't come in to just be an opponent.
Haye is right the whole division is shit. Wlad didn't fight him because he told him he needed to earn it. The deal was two 10 ten heavyweights and then fight Wlad. Weather is Barrett or some other clown it means the same as long as Haye wins.
dsimon writes: My sentiments exactly. Since when is Barrett any good? Haye needs to really be smart here and just keep knockin' guys out. He isn't doing himself any favors trying to get Klitcschko fighting Barrett, thats for sure. I guess his options are limited and he is partially responding to that reality... Ok.
Here's what REED DOESN'T Get... When David Haye Wants to Fight THE BEST Heavyweight on the Planet, Right Out of the Gate, U Guys BITCH about it... & when he DOESN'T Fight the Best Heavyweight on the Planet Immediately, U BITCH about it... FUCK All this "Earn" Shit...Haye was Basically the UNDISPUTED Crusierweight Champ... What EXACTLY did Michael Spinks do to "Earn" his Shot @ Larry Holmes???...What did Roy Jones do to "Earn" his Shot @ Ruiz???... What do Most Reigning Champs Do to "Earn" Title Shots, when they Move Up to Higher Weight Classes???.... REED:dunno:
Not unexpected. Haye's almost always been all talk, little substance. Barrett is the prototypical David Haye opponent.
Maybe i can clarify it for you. Nobody would bitch about Haye fighting the best (in his own words a top 10 guy). With that fight he would have solidified his challenger status in the heavyweight division. Now after running his mouth about top 10 guys he fights Monte Barret who is washed up and possesses very little danger for Haye since he's basically a bigger cruiserweight, too. Not much power and a chin right out of Beijing made by some blind 6 year olds... Basically a perfect match-up for Haye. Now about this some poeple might bitch - just after Haye setting the expectations a notch higher than that. Personnally i find Barrett borderline acceptable an okay tune up for the heavyweight division but a slight disappointment. Great matchmaking in favor of the Hayemaker.
Which Brings REED Back to THE FACT that David Haye WANTED to Go Straight to Wlad Klit, THE BEST Heavyweight N the World, Right Out of the Gates... Haye CAN'T GO Much HIGHER than that, Can He???:dunno:... He's Damned if he DOES & Damned if he DOESN'T... When he ASKS to Fight THE Best Heavyweight Out There, Fans Say he Doesn't "Deserve" it, then When he DOESN'T fight The Best Heavyweights Out There, Fans Bitch... REED:hammert:
Man! Heavyweight boxing is just so dead. Same old names keep popping up like Monte Barrett. Where's the future? No young athletes into boxing by the looks of it. I shudder to think what the sport will be like in 10 years.
Actually i recall it like Haye wanting to fight one or two top ten guys before taking a shot at Wlad. The whole scene at the airport or wherever was just to get some publicity. He knew pretty damn good how Wlad's mandatory situation was like so he knew all along he would need some tune ups. Did anyone actually bitch about a possible Wladi-Haye match-up??? In a time where u have to look VERY carefully for halfway decent fights. I don't think so. :dunno:
