Now I know "fraud" might be a bit harsh, but who are the fighters over the years that have been touted as "big punchers" when they really don't seem to be. For example, I kept hearing folks refer to Sam Peter as the next big heavyweight puncher, but as his career has unfolded it doesn't seem like he is the puncher folks thought he would be.

What are some other examples where the punch of the fighter doesn't quite match the build up?

Acelino Freitas proved to be far less of a puncher as originally thought.

Cliff Etienne's power (nor any other attribute) wasn't all that either

A lot of the time guys are big punchers while coming up but when the reach a higher level, their amount of KO's go down for good reason.

Sam Peter was KOing average fighters but other than Maskaev, he has no "big fight" KO's.

Peter's reputation was a product of laying out Jeremy "Half Man, Half a Chin" Williams on Showtime.

It's hard to ask for a more receptive chin for a highlight reel knockout.

The jury should still be out on peter.

One poster said that a lot of guys cant maintain at the higher levels, thats true, and more to the point perhaps a lot of guys have to learn to set the punch up better, disguise it, etc.

The other problem is: is the guy a failure or is the punch the problem? Is it a power problem? or is something else going on?

Ok now lets look at the heavyweights: who was able to maintain a punch in the division? and rely on it consistantly? You might find that MOST guys came up bum beatin/KOing and then had to develop past the strength of one punch power. Off the top of my head I can think of very few devistating punchers who maintained the edge based on one punch power.

    Victor Oganov,.. what a hype-job,.......EXPOOOOSED!!!!

Carl Froch has overrated power, and an overrated chin, it's going to be thoroughly spectacular what Jermaine Taylor does to him,.. Carl Froch's career will be over.

i agree.....even in his earlier fights i can't remember him laying guys out with one punch

I think Arce's was genuine before he moved up in weight

....Phillip Ndou never lived up to his rep as a dynamite puncher, although he had skills

Duran wasn't exactly a 1 punch blinder, but he ALWAYS has respectable power, all the way up to middlweight. Just look at the barkley fight.

Leonard also said Duran hit very hard.

Freitas is a little bit different because he developed that reputation primarily overseas.

There's ben a few South Americans in recent years that have been built up similarly, where thanks to writers who act as publicists, they've developed reps before most people have seen them.

Joel Julio and Edison Miranda being two others that come to mind.

I also think Freitas lost a bit of the mentality he had early on as a knockout artist. You could probably make a case for Michael Moorer doing the same thing....the longer he stayed at heavyweight.

Trinidad was a wonderful puncher, just not a one punch KO artist. Still he cracked chins that were never cracked before: Vargas, Campas, Mayorga, Joppy. Those guys were never the same after Tito punished.

Joppy was never the same after busting his neck...had nothing to do with Tito. Joppy was ust never that good to begin with, but certainly a lesser fighter after nearly dying.

    Mayorga?

I agree about Mayorga, but no matter how Joppy looked before or after Tito, nobody has ever destroyed him as Tito did. Even Bute, who's supposed to be a pretty good puncher at 168, couldn't drop a badly faded Joppy as hard as Tito did.

Tito's natural power has probably been overrated because the minute his delivery declined, his power seemed to vanish a little bit. Still, the combination of power, speed and accuracy he had in his prime made him a deadly puncher.

It wasn't just chins. Guys like Mayorga, Pineda and Pendleton didn't like it to the body from him, either.

I disagree about Tarver. He's not a huge puncher, but he's definitely a strong puncher.

whether it was handwraps or not, Tito ruined Mayorga's chin.

Ricardo had a Wayne McCollough type punch resistance, and took Tito's best stuff for awhile.

But you just can't take that kind of beating forever.

i threw his name out there semi-seriously, but for a little heavyweight he had a great KO ratio.....and i think Riddick Bowe said he was the hardest puncher he fought

he's knocking guys out at Cruiser now......he's a classic case of a puncher with no chin
