In one of the most significant heavyweight championship fights in years, Samuel Peter and Vitali Klitschko will battle for the WBC Heavyweight Title Saturday on SHOWTIME. Both fighters stake claim to the belt highly coveted belt. Below are quotes from Monday’s press conference in Berlin, Germany. Tensions rose as the controversy over the belt continued when Peter ripped the belt out of Klitschko’s hands and stormed off the stage. <!-- m -->http://fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=21857
Can't believe it?.. .. How did you believe it when Don King and his all American beltholders were each given a consecutive share of Andrew Golota?
That was the whole point of "champion emeritus". Conditions being, if you retire as champ, then you can return anytime and get an immediate shot. Lewis could come back tomorrow and fight for the title if he wanted to.
I think Sam Peter has a decent shot here but he's the underdog for sure. All depends on Vitali's conditioning. 4 years off and fighting the champ immediately is a pretty tough deal. Peter, despite his lacking in skills, is an active fighter. Vitali is also 37 and injury-prone. Wouldn't shock me if he injured himself and quit in his corner during the fight.
IF Vitaly steps into the ring on Saturday, he'll win. I don't see either brother taking any fight if they aren't 100%.
Vitali is past his physical best IMO. We're talking about a man who pulled out of a fight with Rahman 3 times with 3 different injuries. Not sure how legit it was but the man seems prone to injury in just basic sparring. He's had issues with his back, shoulder and leg. Now he's got to contend with age, rust, and conditioning. I think Peter is being sold short. I don't believe Vitali takes a good body shot. Byrd mentioned Vitali wincing and backing up when he(Byrd) hit him to the body. Add about 3 times the power and I'd imagine Sam Peter will do some damage. That's if he's smart enough to try bodypunching. Although I expect him to head hunt as always, jumping off his feet for the most part to reach Vitali's head.
Why not ? He left considered the best the HWD had to offer at the time and he's got more name recognition that anyone but his brother. IMO , it was only not advisable to take this fight without working out some rust but , IMO I think he'll probably do better than Wlad did. Bigger puncher , better chin. If he's stayed in shape ... Peter is in trouble.
It's just about being in shape though. It's the ring rust that you don't just work off with regular conditioning and sparring.
By staying in shape I do mean , that he's been sparring. Seeing as his brother has been active , I'd wager he's stayed in the gym more often then the average guy taking time off and has not gotten as "rusty" as some might otherwise. I'm speculating of course. KO power and a better chin than Wlad , could be all the difference in this fight. Samuel isn't hard to hit and Vitali arguably throws some of the biggest bombs in boxing. If Samuel isn't elusive ... he's going to get rocked.
