Antonio Margarito Vs. Sugar Shane In January

    By David A. Avila
BEVERLY HILLS-Alongside the swimming pool at the plush Beverly Hills Hotel, the top administrators of Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions met on Monday afternoon to discuss a few upcoming events on the horizon and to drop one new bombshell: WBA welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito will be meeting Sugar Shane Mosley early next year.
    <?xml:namespace prefix = o /><o:p></o:p>
“We just have to work out the numbers with HBO,†said Top Rank’s Bob Arum.
    <o:p></o:p>
Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy, said he would be calling HBO to find a date, probably a week before the Super Bowl on Jan. 31.

    <o:p></o:p>
Ever since Mexico’s Margarito defeated Miguel Cotto it’s been Pomona’s Mosley who has asked the loudest to meet with the Tijuana Tornado. He’s one of only a few prizefighters eager to meet the hardnosed welterweight.
    <o:p></o:p>
After Mosley knocked out Nicaragua’s Ricardo Mayorga with seconds remaining in the 12-round fight more than a week ago, he disappointedly told reporters that his quest to meet the feared Mexican fighter seemed like a lost cause.
    <o:p></o:p>
“They have other plans for Margarito,†Mosley said at the Home Depot Center.
    <o:p></o:p>
But Top Rank and Golden Boy, who have embarked on a few joint ventures and have several more coming up such as Kelly Pavlik-Bernard Hopkins in Atlantic City in a few weeks, were able to work terms for the two welterweights to engage in a high profile match.
    <o:p></o:p>
Previous discussions had involved Margarito facing either Joshua Clottey or Miguel Cotto early next year. But now it will be Mosley, who is considered an elite fighter and more recognizable than Clottey and able to garner bigger pay-per-view numbers on a show of this magnitude.
    <o:p></o:p>
What happens to Clottey and Cotto?
    <o:p></o:p>
Arum said that plans are underway to negotiate a match between IBF titleholder Clottey and another feared boxer, WBO titleholder Paul Williams, in a unification contest.
    <o:p></o:p>
The winner between Mosley and Margarito will probably face Cotto in June, said Arum.

Margarito was present at Pechanga Resort and Casino to see his buddy Alfredo “Perro†Angulo defeat Russia’s Andrey Tsurkan. He’ll probably begin training in November for his showdown with Mosley.
    <o:p></o:p>
Mosley will also begin preparation probably in November too. He will be training a couple of blocks from Oscar De La Hoya’s training site. Maybe they’ll be sparring together?
    <o:p></o:p>

It's not a Williams rematch, but look at Ring Magazine's rankings and it shows just how willing a fighter Margarito is.

    1 ANTONIO MARGARITO 37-5 (27)
    2 PAUL WILLIAMS 35-1 (26)
    3 MIGUEL COTTO 32-1 (26)
    4 SHANE MOSLEY 45-5 (38)
    5 JOSHUA CLOTTEY 35-2 (20)

After this fight, if it happens, he will have fought the top four other current welters (and I believe Cintron was in the top 5 or so when he fought him).

It's something that should be appreciated...though a Williams rematch should, and eventually needs to, happen.

Mosley will get Kod against Tony. Hopefully they will both earn a good paycheck out of this.

Are you old enough to know that this almost happened (well, it was talked about, at least)...a title fight at halftime?

Should be a pretty good fight. Margarito is probably at about his peak whereas Shane is clearly past his.

The only thing going for Mosley is a hand speed advantage. Also Antonio will at least "be there for him" to fight. That being said so goes the other way around. Margarito is a much better fighter than Mayorga who Shane just struggled with. (although KO'd in impressive fashion)

Margarito won't fade in the latter rounds where he was able regain ground against Oscar and Mayorga.

Shane's chin and experience might let him hear the final bell but he's going to go through hell just to find out he's lost.

I hope mosley is getting paid well for this. he's skilled enough in survival tactics to make it through the final bell, in my opinion.

I can be found in the bets and wagers forum if anyone truly believes that Mosley will win.

I guess it depends when it happened. Who was in the rumored fight? Maybe I didn't hear about it.

Even though Shane is a shell of his former self, he should still be able to last the distance in this fight in a losing effort. If Marg somehow stopped him, it'd be a highly impressive accomplishment.

Shane looked like 2 pounds of :shit: stuffed in a 16oz bag against MAYORGA. Margarito can only mean a beating that Jin Mosley may have to rescue Shane from.

    Shane looked done against Mayo.

Marge is a hell of a lot more predictable, and less herky jerky than mayo, but still, shane just doesn't have the speed, timing, reactions, and mobility that he used to, or to have a realistic chance of beating marge unfortunately.

Never have I seen so many people write of the Sugar. Sugar is going to take this. He cannot be ko'd. He is like Holyfield, but then with some youth, speed and stamina. Only way he will ever lose is a decision, but I got trust in him. I say he wins a decision or TKO's Margarito late.

    Yep...

That Should B Sugar Shane's Strategy...

Shane IS Quick Enough to Consistently BEAT MargariTO to the Punch (who ISN'T???:dunno:)...The Crowd will HATE the Fight & we'll All B Sitting Here Bitching about how BORING it was Afterwards, but a HIT & HOLD Strategy is Probably Shane's ONLY Chance of WINNING @ this Point of his Career...

& he's QUICK & STRONG Enough to Pull it Off...

By Doing This & Mixing N a Few Bodyshots, Shane Can Conceivably FRUSTRATE MargariTO...

Sure, Shane Looked like ASS N the Mayorga Fight, but Mayorga's Fought as HIGH as the MID 160's...He's STRONGER than MargariTO, N REED's Opinion...Shane WOULDN'T Have to Worry about UNDERestimating the QUICKNESS of the Right Hand Either, which Troubled him Against Mayorga....

Obviously, MargariTO SHOULD B Favored, but REED Gives Sugar Shane a 35-40% Chance of Winning...

Shane has a decent shot at the guy as he will try to hurt Margarito underneath, which is the way to win here.

Cotto couldn't make a dent in Margarito. Not sure Mosley will. But still a good fight on paper. It's just more interesting that Pretty Boy retired like a bitch rather than fight guys like Cotto, Margarito and Shane.

Good fight, and I'd reiterate the sentiment that Margarito deserves major props for taking another tough fight against a Grade-A welter. So much for tune-ups...:bears:

That said, Shane looked very, very long in the tooth against Mayo: he just can't quite pull the trigger like he once could. He should see the final bell, but, so far as I can see, he doesn't have the tools anymore to beat Marge.

Riddick Bowe against Dokes. Rock Newman did quite a bit of talking about it during the Super Bowl.

This is an advantage that Margarito's previous 43 opponents had over him.
