Woman claims attack linked to McCain sticker

(CNN) — A 20-year-old woman told police she was attacked at an ATM in Pittsburgh by a robber who became angry when he saw a bumper sticker for John McCain on her car, a spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh Police Department said Thursday.
Public Information Officer Diane Richard said police "cannot substantiate" her story, however, and the investigation is ongoing.
Richard said the woman told investigators that a man approached her Wednesday night at an ATM on the city's East End, put a blade to her neck and demanded money. She said she gave him $60 and stepped away from him, Richard said.
But the man "became very angry," the woman said, when he noticed her car had a bumper sticker supporting GOP presidential nominee McCain, according to Richard. The woman said he punched her in the back of the head and knocked her to the ground, where he "continued to punch and kick her while threatening her," the spokeswoman said.
Before he left, the woman said, he carved the letter "B" into her face with a knife, according to Richard. There was no indication what the "B" indicated.
The alleged assailant fled on foot, Richard said.
"We, the police, cannot substantiate this yet," she said. "This is what she told police."

The woman, who is not from Pittsburgh, refused medical attention, Richard said, although she told the investigating officer she would see a doctor Thursday. There was no update on her condition, she said.
Richard said the woman described her alleged attacker as a dark-skinned African-American, 6 feet 4 inches tall with a medium build and short dark hair, wearing dark clothing and shiny shoes.
Richard said investigators were working with the bank to obtain surveillance video of the scene, but added that she did not know if the alleged attack was filmed. She also said that the investigating officer did not write in his report that he saw a McCain sticker on the woman's car. She is awaiting word from the officer on whether he did.
McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker told CNN that McCain and running mate Sarah Palin "spoke to the victim and her family after learning about the incident earlier this afternoon."
Hazelbaker said the campaign would not offer more detail out of respect for the woman's privacy.
The Obama campaign responded to the report with a statement, saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

I say go to the booths with 2 t-shirts, one for McCain and one for Obama. Whichever group is heckling at the voting station you go to, just put on that groups t-shirt and go in and vote for who you want.

 

"cannot substantiate" simply means there is no other witnesses or evidence to corroborate her testimony except her own as the victim of this assault. Just about every rape and assault in America can't be substantiated except for physical evidence like DNA left behind or a B carved on her swollen black eyed face. :doh:

Reading that story and seeing the pic, the first thing it reminded me of was Morton Downey Jr alleging he was attacked by Neo-Nazis, only to find out it was all staged. One key piece of evidence being, he fucked up by painting the swastika backwards on his face, since he did it in a mirror. ::

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh police are still questioning a 20-year-old woman who said she was robbed and assaulted at an ATM in Bloomfield because of her political views.

Ashley Todd, of College Station, Texas, said she was using an ATM at Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m. Wednesday when a man approached her and put a knife to her throat.

Police spokeswoman Diane Richard said the robber took $60 from Todd, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using a dull knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.

"She further stated that the male actor approached her from the back again and hit her in the back of her head with an object, she doesn't know what the object was, causing her to fall to the ground where he continued to punch her and kick her and threaten to 'teach her a lesson' for being a McCain supporter," Richard said.

Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank's surveillance cameras.

Speaking to Channel 4 Action News on Friday, Richard said they're still questioning Todd because of some new developments.

"We have learned that the victim's statement has a few inconsistencies in it and her statement has changed," said Richard

Richard said Todd now says she isn't sure if it was a bumper sticker on her car or a campaign button on her jacket that angered the attacker. Richard said Todd added new details to the attack, saying at one point she lost consciousness.

"She also indicated she was sexually assaulted as well. She indicated that when he had her on the ground he put his hand up her blouse and started fondling her. But other than that, she says she doesn't remember anything else. So we're adding a sexual assault to this as well," Richard said.

The robber is described as a dark-skinned black man, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 200 pounds with a medium build, short black hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing dark colored jeans, a black undershirt and black shoes.

The Obama-Biden campaign released a statement, commenting on the attack. The statement said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

The McCain-Palin campaign also released a statement saying, "The McCain campaign is aware of the incident involving one of its volunteers. Out of respect, the campaign won't be commenting. The campaign also confirms that Senator McCain and Governor Palin have both spoken to the woman."

The other side claims to have been attacked, but has no real proof other than the scars on her face. She had a B carved into her face by a dull knife, was sexually assaulted... but in all of that, refused medical attention. And the final caveat, that the attack took place beyond the view of the provided surveillance camera.

I don't have a stake in this but Petre's right on this one. If she's laying on the ground he could have leaned over from the top of her head and carved it out like that.

If she's was unconscious as she claimed the perpertrator wouldn't have had to be on top of her and facing her at the same angle to hold her down.

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.

I now expect the next report from her - if she doesn't recant altogether - to be that it must've been the wrong ATM, since she initially was unsure where it was located.

In the days following the controversy ignited by a sign endorsing Republican presidential and vice presidential candidates Arizona Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin posted in front the Colony South Hotel in Clinton, more controversy has emerged over another McCain-Palin sign. This time Republicans are the ones up in arms.
On Monday morning, McCain supporter Kenneth Rose literally received a rude awakening when he discovered his home had been vandalized while he slept. Gray spay paint was on his son's RV, the worktop for his truck and his yard sign. However the real targets of the vandalism were the two McCain-Palin signs he posted in his front yard. The message sprayed on his property as the signs, "Vote for Barack, vote Obama, vote for Obama 2008."
The spray paint came after Rose's smaller yard sign had been knocked down twice.
"The first day I assumed they [the offending party] had kicked it," Rose said. The next day, he says the same sign was knocked down, but this time's wiring was mangled. Two days later, Rose says the perpetrators drove through his yard in rural Cheltenham, leaving tracks, to deface a number of things including his largest sign a 2-foot by 8-foot "McCain-Palin, Country First" sign raised up on wood. "The idea was to cover up the sign," he said.

The wave of vandalism targeting supporters of presidential candidate John McCain isn’t just limited to South Carolina, as we experienced last weekend when thugs sprayed graffiti all over the York County GOP headquarters, nor is it limited to Republicans.
At some point during the wee hours of the morning, supporters of opponent Barack Obama attacked a private home in Prince George’s County, Md., defacing the house, an RV, a truck cover, and a two foot by eight foot yard sign. Apparently, the home owner was a registered Democrat and the local Obama fans were none to pleased with his decision to back McCain.
