Olympic Leonard was something else. Some of the best combination punching ever, probably the best in Olympic history.

Pros should be allowed in Olympics. You shouldn't be able to get gold unless you really are the best in the world

Leonard was the underdog going into that fight, as Aldama was a genuine bad ass and the world amateur champion.

Shows you how great a fighter Ray was when he cleaned his plow.

Aldama looked GOOD. Tragedy that these Cuban's never got the chance to fight pro.

    I agree.

Mike McCallum once told me that Aldama was the best fighter he ever fought, amateur or pro, and I for sure thought he would have told me Curry, Kalamby, Jones guys like that.

Aldama finally did win the Gold in 1980 by beating John Mugabi in the finals, and I agree that he would have made a terrific pro.

Yep, if I'm not mistaken Aldama's previous opponent was seriously hurt and taken out of the ring on a stretcher. I used to have all these old fights, I still do... my boxing tape collection is just sitting in my closet. I don't even know if I have a functioning VCR anymore.

I'm going to the pawn shop this week to grab one... I was looking through my tapes when I moved last month and I have some gems. Would be a shame if they were never watched again.-

Anything that's not already widely available out there you should convert to digital.

What was stupid was Cosell and Foreman referring to Aldama thoughout the entire fight as "The Cuban".

Is 'Aldama' that hard to pronounce?

That was sweet. Sugar Ray truly was the man. I knew after watching that fight that he would be something special. Why can't we produce those type of Olympians anymore? Do they all turn pro too soon? Sport lost its lustre?

    No argument from me.
SRL had great talent, but he also, (unlike some other fighters who possess great talent), had a great chin, heart & skills to match.
    A true Great.
