I say it is. No way was Shane on Roy's level from 2000 to 2001 when people had him numero uno lb 4 lb.
hindsight slightly edging a win over DLH was much better than the bullshit garbagemen Jones was picking to fight for years
Yeah, it was a protest vote on most peoples part. Jones had fought NOBODY for about 4 years by that point. Shane had just become the first guy to legitimately beat Oscar after 11 (?) dominant Lightweight defences, he deserved the slot.
wELL SHANE and Tito had been top 10 p4p for the previous years...Trinidad since the mid 90's..once Tito beat DLH*,Reid,Vargas,Joppy he was #2 p4p...behind MOsley.....it's not like those two guys came out of nowhere and got the top spots....
Hindsight BEATS Hate, as Time has PROVEN... KNOWLEDGEABLE Boxing Fans NEVER Allowed their BIAS Against Roy to Affect his RIGHTFUL Spot... REED:mj:
Shane deserved his spot. and although he has never been as talented as RJJ (few have) he was very talented himself and he was more of a fighter. he can take a punch and if neccesary a beating. which makes him a more complete fighter in my opinion.
Roy was the best fighter in the world at that point. It wasn't close to be honest, no one was on his level. It was, however, punishment from the media. Roy milked his HBO contract and fought a long series of crap fights.
absolutely. I honestly think if in that time Roy would have fought DM or Jirov, many (not all) Roy haters would have gave him the nod. I was a huge Roy fan, and some of those fights were hard to stomach.
I really liked Roy, Shane and Tito at the time. Roy was on another level, but yeah, he wasted a lot of time. I see why Tito and Shane were rated #1 by some, enough was enough.
Is there a STRETCH of Fights U have an Issue w/ or 1-2 Fights Sprinkled In???.... The Thing is, Roy Jones was Facing Top 10 Guys RANKED by Ring Magazine, the Very People who CRITICIZED him the Most....How Fair is THAT???... REED:dunno:
Roy of course should have been p4p #1 at the time but it's by far not the biggest myth in boxing ever, Shane was and still is an awesome fighter, easily worthy of a top p4p status at the time.
Goes to show you just what I criticize in p4p lists: Mosley stepped into a new weight category where it was obvious that he wouldn't be as good as he was at lightweight. So going up to welters should have lowered his ranking instead of pushing him up but this is something most people don't get. Roid was obviously the best fighter compared to his division
it's not really a myth if that was the consensus or at the very least, arguable. roy jones imo, has been the best fighter p4p since whitaker began to slip, but during the time when he was ranked behind tito and mosley, he was fighting bums to decrease his merit. mosley was coming off a decisive win over de la hoya after moving up in weight. it was somewhat justifiable. either way, who gives a shit? mijares was ranked in the top 10 by many. was that a myth too?
You ROY fans better STFU or I might have to revisit my decision to root for him over Calzaghe. Reminds me of what pushed me into hating Roy so much to begin with. It wasn't Roy.............it was all the damn Roy sycophants! :nono:
You have it completely backwards. The fact that Mosley was succesful against bigger fighters further proves how good he would be if everyone was the same size.
in all fairness, shane was never as good as roy. not even close. even a past prime jones was able to outpoint tarver (who stlyistically gave him problems) as opposed to mosley who couldn't figure out forrest at all. jones was much more dominant at 175 than mosley has been at any weight class.
No, that's where people goo wrong. If Mosley had been able to go back to lightweight after defeating DLH, then it would be as you said. But he changed his size to be a full-grown welterweight and for a man of that size his reach and power were not that great anymore, which was proven by Forrest. When you consider how good a fighter is, you have to consider also his physical abilities, not just techique
Mosley couldn't go back to lightweight. He was too big for the weight class. He was huge at 135 and said he felt more comfortable at 147. He looked great at 147 for all but one (Rivera) of his first 6 fights there. He wasn't necessarily a better fighter at 135, but was facing weaker opposition there. DM and Roy not fighting each other will undoubtedly harm each other's legacies, but other than that, Roy was fighting the top ranked light-heavyweights around. In 99-00, Jones had just unified 3 of the belts, and Harding was one of the best LHWs at the time. I think he gets too much criticism for his opposition at 175, of course with the exception of DM, in which case both guys deserve criticism. His opposition at 168 post-Toney hurts him more, with the quality fighters at that division at the time. The criticism around 2000 for his LHW opposition was too harsh.
He is close to it since he is more clearly above the rest of his divison than most. However he hasn't shown the kind of dominance that would make him #1 So in my opinion the only correct way to rank p4p (if there is one) is to compare how well they do in their own weight class. If a guy changes his weight class, then he is compared against the new competition.
I don't think anyone ever disagreed he wasn't fighting top10 guys. But for ROY in his prime, that simply just wasn't good enough. Roy needed to own every belt under the sun and litterally clear out the division. What made it worse for me, was I knew he would destroy Jirov or DM and shut up everyone. But we never got to see it.
Yes. The problem here is that DLH was not bigger than Mosley since they both were 147 lbs and neither could go any lower.
Shane being ranked p4p #1 during that time imo didn't really have as much to do with whether he was a better fighter or not than RJJ (Roy is better) than how impressive his achievement then was. It was a momentum thing and I've no problem with it. Mosley is an exceptional fighter, and people tend to forget just how stacked the late nineties-early 2000 top ten p4p was (it had prime-to-peak versions of De La Hoya, Trinidad, RJJ, Tszyu, MAB, Erik, Forrest, Lewis, etc). Mosley jumped two weight classes and decisively beat DLH, a fellow p4p'er who was at his absolute best. That was damn impressive (even in hindsight).
How or why should Roy have been punished,... when a fighter like Fraud, was actually ELEVATED, in the midst of his 'cooling off' period after stinking out the Castillo rematch. :crafty:
