When people look at the mythycal pound for pound champion no.1 they always seem to pick the fast fighters. When was lasttime a fighter not known for the great handspeed was regrd to be a top p4p fighter. Chavez is last person I think of that comes into that category. Look at recent lists: Whittaker - Fast as a fat man walking past an early morning backery Jones Jr - Fast as a chiken Mayweather - Fast as a poor man who find the money for crack cocoaine Mosley - Fast as a woman running from an Uzbeki ODLH - Fast as a dodge Caliber Pacquiao - Fast as a paedofile flying to the paedophines Even Toney in mid 90s and Bernard is not too slow Maybe Tito who is slow as a Hyundai Is speed a pre requizate for being a top player?
Tito was slow of foot and brain. But sensible people never had him No1. I suppose Chavez is probably the slowest guy to make it to No1, though he was quicker than most.
Tito, Chavez, Hopkins, Toney These guys are not fast. Americans favor lightning fast guys so the #1 guy is more likely going to be wicked fast, but in reality, handspeed is only one factor in winning and can be overcome with other abilities and skills.

Foster had fast hands. Jackson's handspeed wasn't bad. His right hand was fairly fast, and incredible dangerous. Barrera had pretty good handspeed as well. The only ones here I'd consider slow are Foreman, and older Monzon.
Since I can remember the "P4P" thang............Hagler was probably the slowest #1 guy I can think of.

I don't think Hagler was slow at all. He had pretty quick hands for a middleweight actually. His straight left was fast, it came out of nowhere, pretty fast jab too. Thinking about it yeah, no way Hagler is slow, especially considering he was a middleweight, and a stocky one at that.
In comparison to the absolute speed demons, then yes, he simply wasn't in that league of speed. But I would say for sure that he had above average handspeed for a middleweight, quick reactions, and possibly average footspeed, but decent footwork. Put it this way, I think he was a fair bit quicker than both Chavez and Arguello, and he was obviously significantly bigger than both of them.
hagler's best asset was his ability to throw short punches in combination on the inside - that's how he hurt srl. he also had heavy hands.

haha...2nd chime in reply of the week sticking up for Hagler being fast after this thread begins with the guys you mention. Jeepers fuck, we aren't talking fast compared to Butterbean, but to the fastest of the fast, and Hagler was nowhere near that level and he was a p4p #1 type guy. So that makes him one more good example to contrast with the OP's query.
But at the same time, he is definitely not a contender for slowest pound for pounder. Like I said, he is significantly faster than Chavez or Arguello, and he was a middleweight.
