Final Prediction: Roy Jones vs. Joe Calzaghe

I originally said Calzaghe would win a wide decision.

I change it to Calzaghe TKO4.

I think he gets rid of Roid in under 4 rounds. Roy takes too many flurries and begins to cover up more and more along the ropes before falling in a heap in the corner.

The end comes at 2:43 of round 4.

I picked Margarito to beat Cotto (heck, a 37 year-old Shane Mosley almost had Cotto, but was just too past-it to pull the trigger), Hopkins to beat Pavlik (who's overrated) and now, Jones to beat Calzaghe. If Roy succeeds, and I think he can/will, it's really an indictment of these guys reign over a field bereft of prime versions of great fighters they're being picked to supposedly beat in decisive fashion.

 

Let's see, Lok and D-man picked RJJ, and apparently Double L is rooting for him. Damnit, i'm starting to worry for Roy's life!

For what it's worth, Maxboxing's forum poll has about the same slant. At last check, FB was 28-17. Max was something like 75-46.

My odds were off before, both sites have it roughly around 8-5 in favor of Joe. Closer than the actual oddsmakers, mind you... though I get the sense that most (not all) Jones picks are out of wishful thinking more than anything else.

What surprised me was the number of American sportswriters picking Roy to win. Amazing how something as simple as returning a phone call can skew the opinions of the sport's "professional" journalists.

I say that because even three years ago, most wouldn't hesitate to toss his ass under a bus. Today, they have him beating one of the best current fighters in the world, none offering any sort of reasoning, other than "one great fight left in him" rhetoric that's designed to sell PPV's, not meant as an actual fight strategy.

 

I favor Calzaghe by decision. If that doesn't happen, the only other outcome is Roy by KO. I will be rooting for the later, but you just have to favor Calzaghe in this one. I hope to god I am wrong here, but Roy just isn't active enough to win a decision. I don't think Calzaghe will stop Roy, he just doesn't punch very hard and never sits down on his shots. If this was in Wales, I could see a Manfredo type stoppage for Calzaghe, but not in the US.

So officially, I'm going Calzaghe UD, but rooting heavily for Roy.

It was a psych job. Tito pretty much retired after that fight. Winky has massive defense and don't forget Tito did hurt Winky in the second fight. Jones is bigger than winky and if you watch the fight with Roy Roy used Winky's defense.

Back around 2001/2, Calzaghe would have given Roy the toughest fight he would have had in years, but it would have still been a reasonably clear win for RJJ.

Now...

This fight is bullshit, it really is. Joe arguably bloomed late as a fighter, but he is still a few years past his best and has almost stopped entirely trying to knock people out, knowing instead that he is good enough to win on points and keep his unbeaten record in the process. He still has the ability to throw those 'slappy' flurries, intemingled with the ocassional power shot which keeps his opponent off balance and on the back foot, impressing judges as he does so. He has also remained as tough as hell; arguably the most resolute fighter in the sport today.

Jones, in the meantime, is absolutely fucking shot to ribbons. Meaningless wins over two C-Level fighters in Hanshaw and that Prince buffoon, coupled with a victory in a glorified exhibition bout against a fat, retired welterweight have someohow legitimised a fight which, as close as 12 months ago, would have appealed to no-one bar the bank managers of Jones and Calzaghe.

Jones' relfexes have gone, he can't pull the trigger as quick as he once did and his chin has been exposed entirely by two fighters (Johnson and Tarver) who are the sort of grist a prime RJJ would have clowned with relative ease.

Johnson was able to unload often and accurately enough to accumulate a stoppage win over Jones FOUR YEARS AGO. Glen Johnson who, for all that he is great to watch and is an admirable fighter who'll fight whoever and wherever, is as slow as they come at that sort of level.

Roy might be fairly competative early, as Calzaghe eases his way into the contest showing Jones tons of repsect, then, unless Roy somehow does what no-one else has ever done and finds the picture shot to stop Joe, Calzaghe will up his workrate, making Roy come to him and throwing his flurries to impress the judges and win the rounds. After a few bad rounds, Roy will stop even looking for Joe, realising that there will be some merit (and lots of money) if he makes it to the end in a reasonably competative manner.

Calzaghe by a wide decision in a fight which should have happened 6 years ago but is now little more than a money-spinning sparring session.

Roy is shot, barely throws and is happy to get outworked as long as he's not KO'ed.

 

The determining factor IMHO is whether or not RJJ has found a new juice to take during his training. If he has, I can't see him losing.

His speed will be very intimidating to Calzaghe. I think that fact has been overlooked by many of the posters here.

Also, RJJ, at this stage in his career, never trades with people. So as long as he fights ahead of Calzaghe, he'll control the pace, which will make Calzaghe very uncomfortable. And RJJ's hands are still quick enough that Sloppy's defense, if you even want to call it that, will be penetrated.

My guess is RJJ knows exactly how to beat Sloppy.

 

Jones is going to pick Joe apart. Roy is fighting like Winky now with a little more power. He is using that long arm defense.

 

AGAIN, anayone thinking Roid is going to win, come into the betting forum and make some "easy" money.

Calzaghe is going to retire this fool for good on Saturday. :kick:

 

If he fights that way against Joe he may avoid damage but he'll get easily out-worked and thus out-pointed.
