    Same here.

I'm drawing parallels to this bout and Lewis-Tyson. Two guys that are old and pretty close in years, but one of them much closer to his best than the other. Where a lot of the picks for Tyson/Jones might be wishful thinking or denial.

I hope this time, it's not the case, and we see an upset.

Kinda like all the knowledgeable boxing fans that picked Pavlik over Hopkins. What about all the knowledgeable boxing fans that picked Hatton over PBF. What about all the knowledgeable boxing fans that picked Cotto over Margarito. What about all the knowledgeable boxing fans that picked Peter of Klit. I'll Holla 5000

I picking Jones by decision. I dont think Calzaghe will react well to somebody who is has such a vast handspeed advantage over him and throws faster flurries than him. Add to the fact that Jones is bigger, stronger and natural counterpuncher, will play into his hands as Calzaghe typically likes to come forward.

Joe is the most successful counterpuncher of the last five years...you confuse activity with aggression... :nono:

I’ve been waiting nearly two years for this bout and, finally, it’ll go down tomorrow night. I think it’s interesting to see so many intelligent heads split on a fight where Jones is a 3-1 underdog. The majority of this board is picking Calzaghe, mainly because they feel the old man is looking his age. And I think those picking Jones believe he has enough left in the tank – and the kind of intelligence only the very elite have – to win, perhaps spectacularly.

I felt that way when Roy fought Tarver a third time. And indeed, Roy did have enough left to win in spectacular fashion. But he didn’t have the inner fortitude. Call it facing his demons or point to the final two rounds. Or maybe his heart was never quite on the level the rest of his body was. Whatever it was, it wasn’t what his fans envisioned.

Perhaps that’s why they’re picking him now. They see another chance for Roy to do what, truthfully, he alone should be able to do. Maybe this time he realizes it too. He’s certainly got the right opponent for it, a fighter who won’t stop coming and looks to do serious damage on him tomorrow night. Roy Jones will have no choice but to fight or fold. I think he fights. If he gets tagged, it’s probably over. But I think he gets there first and he gets there harder. Jones’ gameplan has been discussed enough, that is the essence of what it boils down to.

At worse, Roy Jones has shown that he’s nowhere near the fighter he was years ago but can still easily handily mediocre ones. What does that make him, Sakio Bika? Or a guy who’s going to suffer an even worse fate?

Roy Jones may lose tomorrow night, even his ardent fans accept this. Joe Calzaghe is a great fighter – he was solid from day one and is now experienced enough to outthink (while working) a cagey Bernard Hopkins. Only one other person did that. And this is the kind of opportunity he relishes. So once again, I find myself voting with my heart instead of my mind. Can you blame me for believing Jones wins because of his?

    TKO 7

That post in this forum was relating to the Lacy/Calzaghe fight not Jones/Calz.

However, while we are on the subject. Calz UD.

Yeah, Roy will beat Calzaghe down for the whole fight and then KO him.

    1) This board always reflects the odds and the majority is usually right... this is a typical split.

    2) Roy fought that third fight to save face, not to get ko'ed... period. That is what was so pathetic about it. He saved face at the expense of his fans and showed no heart other than to not get manhandled again.

    3) Joe tagging Roy and its over? Slappy? Joe gets decisions because he throws a lot of half ass punches and the judges like punch count. I think it is debatable that he beat Hopkins. Roy is smart enough to know this.

Anyhow I hope you are right.

Calzaghe was not "bested" by Hopkins. And assuming that is the majority opinion is incorrect.

Yes he was. Sure Joe hit with more slaps but one guy got dropped and one guy looked the worse for wear in that fight. I know you will trot out the official line about judging fights round by round... fine but that is the problem sometimes imo. Hopkins was more effective imo and Joe threw more slappity slaps. That is not effective punching imo.

Not sure your point about majority decisions but most guys in the know would not attribute much to that victory other than Calzighe was lucky Hopkins got tired.

This is the latest from RJ's diary

I think I'll probably start a little slow, let him start fast and then walk him down. I want to start out slowly because I want to see where he is coming from. I don't know exactly what I will see.

He will start slow for the simple reason he can't fight for 12 rounds.

  22. Joe King

Roy's best chance at a KO is early. He should pile on the points and then take every other round off like he always does.

The Kellerman curse was broken when Max left ESPN. Now Teddy has inherited the curse. In fact, Atlas' recent track record of picking fights is WORSE than Max's ever was... and that says ALOT!
