i tend to agree - all it does is prove that he is better than the washed up version of roy jones circa 2008. if he lost the fight it would have destroyed his legacy imo so in a way joe saved his legacy last night
plus, he beat RJJ in less impressive fashion than Coffe or Tarver. I'd like to see Sloppy fight Tarver.
True. He has the name on his resume though. Anyone with some boxing knowledge knows the deal though. Everyone knows that a prime Roy would have done a number on Calzaghe. Prime Roy beat a prime Hopkins and Calzaghe struggled with an old Hopkins. Roy deteriorated much faster than Hopkins because Roy relied more on his physical attributes. For Calzaghe this was an easy way to put a name on his record and make some easy money.
A win over an alltime great A good display at lightheavyweight More US recognition People are making out that Jones was a complete punch bag....he wasn't.....he is no where near where he was but he still had the fastest hands that Joe has faced to date....Joe had to deal with that and he did.... ....It was sad to see Calzaghe toying with Jones at times.....we can all pick a few names out there who would probably beat Jones as well, but would any do it with such ease? ....Joe once again showed his class as a boxer
And you can't fault the guy for taking the fight - in the same way you can't fault Lennox for taking on Tyson. he has beaten the legend, thus proving that he is better than the shopworn version... i disagree entirely that jones beat a prime hopkins. i really think hopkins became a much better fighter with experience he gained as a pro. the version that fought roy was nothing close to prime.
No, no, no. Roy was completely shot. Slower than Richard Hall and he still dropped Joe like a sack of potatoes. Roy was so slow against Joe that the fight meant absolutely nothing except that Joe would lose to a prime Roy. Any other take on this fight means you are a racist hater. Sorry.
well i do hate racists....lets make that clear Roy demonstrated that he still had quick hands a few times in the fight....his reflexes and foot speed have slowed a lot more than his hands
Nice. No. Roy didn't look fast at all during the fight no matter what you may think. His hands were s-l--o----w. It was pathetic. He was a shell of a shell of a shell of his old self. And Joe even had trouble with this version of Roy...getting dropped on his ass and losing 4-5 rounds along the way. Hell, it wasn't out of the realm of possibility that Roy could have gotten the decision.
WTF,LOL. That's ridiculous. Joe dominated Roy.The only part of the fight Joe lost was that fluke forearm shot. Joe even was winning that round. It was a 10-9 ROUND, Imo and Roy lost ever single minute after that. Stop bullshiting. In their respective primes, both guys would have ducked the other.
For fuckin WHAT?:atu: Tarver is nearly just as shot as Roy is! The only fight out there for Calz now is Dawson. If he doesnt wanna fight Chad, it makes no sense but for him to do anythin except retire.
It adds the name of a top 10 all time great and a present day top 10 light heavyweight fighter. Prime Roy would have dealt Tarver, Johnson and Calzaghe all with moderate ease.
Well, atleast Calzaghe fought someone who's done things at Light-heavyweight, and has proven himself there to a degree,.. Hopkins pulls fighters up who may be 'names' in smaller divisions, but probably wouldn't beat another Lightheavyweight in the top fucking 10..... yet Hopkins is praised as the lord of the universe for it :dunno:.
Amen. You and I are the two protectors of the truth. HOPKINS is disgusting. I was one of his few fans and that is one of my few regrets in my boxing posting career. Hopkins has fooled nearly everyone with his disgusting smoke and mirrors. I heard Hopkins stabs people that say the word Dawson. Chickenlips, Hopkins is, a mongrel coward.
Handspeed is just one attribute of a fighter. Who cares if he still has fast hands, if he doesn´t have the workrate, will or reflexes to do anything with them. He was a sitting duck after six rounds. That win means as much as beating Chris Henry or Adrian Diacanu.
:bears: Well said. This is the most important thing to remember when considering a prime vs. prime matchup between these two.
it shows that joe really is overrated Roy was totally shot and still dropped his welsh ass like a jar of welshes grape in the supermarket
BS. Roy was better than ever before. He had all his speed and power left and now he had the experience to fight at more measured pace and pick his shots rather than throw slap flurries. It was just that he faced a greater fighter than ever, perhaps the greatest ever
For the love of God, don't give Calzaghe any ideas! You know Tarver is getting old, Calzaghe should be calling him out any time now.
