:nono: He was a 2 time NCAA All-American and the 2000 NCAA heavyweight champion. The dude has legit wrestling credentials.
I agree 100%. Lesnar is a freak and he is talented so it isn't like a bum came off the street. Still, one of my buddies bench pressed 400 pounds. I saw him knock two guys cold with one punch and he kicked this stupid cholos ass and basically kicked his entire front row of teeth out of his head. He was 5 foot 5 and 225 a fucking badass. If he boxed Veron Forrest today, he'd get knocked out. It's hard to look up to these guys as athletes when basically people are just talented guys can come in and beat arguably the greatest MMA fighter in history.
Once again. 45 years old and not even close to the greatest MMA fighter in history. Trust me, Lesnar won't hold the title for more than 3 defenses.
I know all that and I agree with your above post about Lesnar's credentials. Lesnar is a freak. I was just agreeing with Mexican Wedding Shirt, subjectively it sours me to MMA whether rational or not.
Of course they are very different, but they are both combat sports, and Lesnar actually beat Couture with a punch. I was perhaps going a bit over the top last night, but this makes MMA look bad. Boxing is so much more advanced. This is almost as bad as if Kimbo had beaten someone like Couture.
Maybe. He doesn't look like he punches much power behind those punches, they are arm punch esque, but amazingly he does throw them pretty straight, I agree, straighter than people like Lidell. You have to admit though, Lesnar himself, if he had made the transition to boxing instead, he would have no chance against any top heavyweight after 3 fights. Also, to me Randy didn't look particularly worn down. After round 1, it was Lesnar that looked more gassed. Half the time Randy was doing his old standing up pinning him against the cage trick.
This is how I feel. And I would like to reiterate, I am not an MMA hater, I've been watching MMA since UFC 1.
It only makes MMA look bad to dopes who can't get past the fact that Lesnar spent a few years with the WWE, and want to ignore his wrestling pedigree, his size, his strength, his athleticism and talent. He could beat Couture, Nog, Fedor and Jesus Christ all in the same night, and still there would be people crying that Brock isn't a real fighter. And comparing Kimbo to Brock Lesnar is just retarded. Lesnar is a decorated World Class Athlete, Kimbo is some guy who beat up crack heads on Youtube. TFK
That's because Lesnar's wrestling background would be of little help to him in a boxing match. Boxing and MMA are not the same sport. TFK
I wouldn't say ironic: Randy isn't a boxer, AND the shot landed on the back of his head. And whoever said Brock was fat HAS to be smoking something. He's a beast, dildo tattoo and all.
Just to add, to the people who think Lesnar winning is bad for the sport, to the average fan, what looks worse? The UFC Champion being a 31 year old, 265 lb monster who was an NCAA Wrestling Champion, or a 45 year old light heavyweight with a 16-8 record coming into the fight? TFK
Lesnar won with a punch behind the ear. Plus, they are both combat sports. Surely if you're that good of an an athlete/fighter, you should be able to have success in boxing too? Lesnar was throwing a lot of punches last night actually, he used boxing to some degree, even setting up the stoppage with a punch behind the ear.
Brock was the NCAA amateur wrestling champion, and he also made the Vikings team although he was a late cut in their pre-season. What's amazing is that he was good enough to make their team and he WASN'T a football player. The guy is an amazing athlete. Damn though, Rena Mero has fallen off considerably from her days as Sable in the WWE.
Nah, I am not one to say he is not a real fighter, he obviously has a REAL wrestling pedigree (not WWE) and he has seriously trained to be an MMA fighter, therefore he is a real fighter. The point is, it does speak volumes about MMA, that a former wrestler, pro footballer, whatever, can have 3 pro fights and beat someone like Couture. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth. It shouldn't happen. Take any athlete from ANY sport, preferably one with the physical make up or experience that would serve them well in boxing, let them have 3 pro fights, and see if they can beat a top heavyweight. It would never, ever happen, and that's the way it should be. I am disappointed about last night. For example, Anderson Silva couldn't even beat a scrub boxer.
I gotta laugh when people compare the advanced state of boxing to MMA: boxing utilizes a totally different skillset than MMA. Boxing only officially allows contact coming from the gloved fists, there're no takedowns, and the fighters must remain standing at all times. MMA is boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and grappling. It is much harder to do all those proficiently than it is to do boxing alone, so of course boxers are going to have better hands. Plus MMA is in its infancy. Although MMA didn't officially start with the UFC, MMA's popularity is linked to a great extent with the rise of the UFC and Pride FC. The UFC began in 1993. Essentially, mainstream MMA has only been popularized in the last 15 years. It's not likely to be displayed as proficiently as boxing because it hasn't had the same amount of time for the sport's technical aspects and training wisdom to have matured. Boxing has been popular for well over 100 years, so the technical merits ( technique, style, etc) have gotten to a state of relatively high maturity. You can't compare the two fairly. You simply have to learn a lot more in MMA than you do in boxing. You have to learn boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and at least some type of grappling discipline in today's MMA. It takes longer to learn all of that than it does to focus on just boxing technique alone.
How about another stand up sport, that utilises hand techniques, footwork, accuracy, timing, speed etc etc, a sport that is ALL stand up and striking. Let's say a high level Kendo practitioner, or another solely stand up discipline, using the hands. Do you think they could train in boxing for a while, have 3 pro fights, and then beat Calzaghe for example? :: And I'm not happy about it, I don't want MMA to look bad, because I like MMA.
Of Course he WOULDN'T... Lesnar's Strong Suit is GRAPPLING & his LITERAL Strength...Professional Boxing is MUCH More of a FINESSE Sport than MMA & Obviously, Lesnar ISN'T a Finesse Guy... Other than Jiu-Jitsu, the WEAKEST Area of Lesnar's MMA Game is his BOXING...But UNTIL he Made the Transition to MMA, it's DOUBTFUL to REED if Lesnar EVER Boxed a Day N his Life... "However", If DIRTY Boxing was a Sport, Lesnar Wouldn't B Half Bad @ it...MAULING, LEANING ON & CLINCHING Guys would B to Lesnar's ADVANTAGE... Boxing will ALWAYS B # 1 on REED's Lists of Combat Sports...But REED just DOESN'T Get the Need to COMPARE Boxing & MMA... REED:hammert:
I don't usually compare boxing to MMA, and as you know, I like MMA. I don't come on here slagging it off all the time. But I guess, AS an MMA fan, I am disappointed that a novice like Lesnar could beat Couture. Lesnar has a wrestling background etc, and a Wing Tsun guy has a background of standup fighting and hand techniques. It would be like a Wing Tsun guy beating a top boxer after 3 pro fights. It's just bizarre. I liked to think MMA was more advanced than that. It's the sort of thing one might expect in MMA ten years ago. Lesnar is big and strong, and fairly athletic, but any top MMA fighter should have been too seasoned for him. It sort of suggests that you don't need much skill or experience in MMA, just size, strength, athleticism. Nothing Lesnar did was particularly skillful or advanced.
Instead of Focusing on the # of Fights, Look @ WHO Lesnar's Fought, Mex... Mir, Herring, Couture... Correct REED if he's WRONG, but Aren't All 3 of those Guys HIGHLY RANKED Heavyweights???...Well, INCLUDING Mir, Brock Lesnar was DOMINATING All 3 of them... Mir had a Grand Total of ONE Shining Moment N his Fight w/Lesnar & that's when he Trapped him N that LegLock...But UNTIL then, Lesnar was FEEDING Mir Pieces of his OWN Ass...Herring was PUMMELED from Bell to Bell for 15 FULL Minutes...& Now Couture...ALL of them were Toooooooooo "Seasoned" for Lesnar ON PAPER, but it Didn't Play Out that Way IN the Cage... It's NOT Like Lesnar Fought a String of CANS like Kimbo Slice Did, he Fought LEGIT Guys...& he MANHANDLED All of them...Even a SEASONED MMA Vet will STRUGGLE w/the EXTREME Strength, SIZE & ATHLETIC ABILITY of Lesnar...Couture Said as Much In his Post Fight Interview... The PUNCHES that Lesnar Landed Didn't LOOK Spectacular, but there was 270lbs of BRUTE FORCE behind those Shots...He BUCKLED Couture Virtually Everytime he Touched him... Just like Any Other Combat Sport, Size MATTERS N MMA...Seasoned MMA Guys N their PRIMES (Guys like BJ Penn, GSP or Anderson Silva) Probably COULDN'T Do a Damn Thing w/a BEAST Like Lesnar Either... The SCARY Thing is, the Time to "Expose" Lesnar is NOW...Because w/EACH Fight, he Looks More & MORE Improved... REED:hammert:
so....we had a better look at Brock....any new thoughts on a Brock-Fedor fight?.....i'm not expert, but Fedor is stronger than Couture....and Randy got himself in a couple of good positions where Fedor could do a better job of exploiting right?
Anybody that's good in submission fighting can beat Brock Lesnar right now and Fedor is one of them.Lesnar's fight last night changes nothing.
Maybe Lesnar is just a good fighter, and a freakish sort of 1 off, compared to other noobs who might fancy their chances at MMA. But it's still a bit of a shock to me, defeating Couture. For example, it's surprising that Sapp had even as much success as he did in MMA.
