I buy the odd copy, maybe one or at most two a year. I'm pretty much only interested in the special edition issues.

I noticed Oscar and crew wearing The Ring apparel as well. I wonder if Oscar will be elevated to P4P #1 after beating Pacquiao?

i bought a few just to get autographs. i never cared much for the content, although i have copies of 80 greatest fighters from the last 80 years and top 100 best punchers of all time or some shit.

The first story I read on their website was their ringside coverage of Taylor-Lacy. The writer they hired was from The Tennessean - his role there, to cover high school sports. This was the first boxing card he's ever covered.

The only reason I read it was because I saw him lifting passages from MY article (he was seated directly in front of me) - I emailed Nigel & co, first citing plagiarism then questioning how far their standards have fallen to where they hire HS sports editors to fill in at ringside. No response was given, though the story was taken down the very next morning.

If there was any justice to come out of all of that, it was that B-Scene's lovely popups and viruses wound up crashing his computer, forcing him to reboot and run way past deadline

Not that I wouldn't mind any major publication on my resume. But The Ring is overpriced garbage these days, and run by a stubborn lunatic. If Steve Farhood was back in charge, then hell yeah, I'd write for them and wouldn't even ask for pay.

  14. Jake

The fact that the article no longer exists is rewarding enough.

  15. Mitchell Kane

Mitchell Kane WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

Yeah, I stopped reading The Ring shortly after Farhood left. I think it was Collins' rescoring of DLH-Quartey and re-adjusted scorecard that was the last straw.

The only thing I pay for from them now is the annual almanac.

    "The Qu'ran of Boxing" ???...

Yeah, that was classic. Something along the lines of, his ringside scorecard of a 1-pt win for Quartey didn't feel right, so he rewatched on tape and saw that Oscar in fact deserved to win.

Fittingly, he then decides 4 years later that ringside scoring is in fact the only way to fly, in supporting his claim that Shane beat Oscar, and anyone who had Oscar winning was merely influenced by the broadcast.

I think I remember hearing about that at the time.

Incidentally, I think might have been the last time I watched a post-fight press conference on ESPNEWS.

    It was good theater.

Boxing is Basically 1 Big FRATERNITY...Fans, Fighters, Promoters, Ref's, Judges, Writers, ect....We're ALL 1 Big DYSFUNCTIONAL Family, Basically...

So it IRKS REED WHENEVER Newspapers or Magazines Hire NON "Boxing" Guys to Cover the Sport...NON "Boxing" Guys DON'T Care as Much about the Sport & it SHOWS N their Work...

REED had to Put Up w/that Shit N the Dallas Morning News, when Calvin Watkins was a "Boxing" Writer...Watkins is a GREAT Dude Personally, & REED Doesn't Blame him for Making a Buck, but ALL ALONG, he Wanted to B a FOOTBALL Writer (Which he is Now)...When he Wrote about Boxing, it was APPARENT that Watkins WASN'T a "Fan" of the Sport Necessarily...

So Hearing that the So-Called "Bible of Boxing" Hired a NON "Boxing" Guy PISSES REED Off...

agREED. The funny thing about The Tennessean is, for the past five boxing shows (beyond the bottom barrel club level), they've sent five different writers (six, if you count their staff writer and the aforementioned joker who went o/b/o The Ring).

But yeah, you expect that from a newspaper. It's different for a boxing-based publication. What I don't get is, they already had a TV report in place (Mike Rosenthal, I believe). Why not just go with that from jump?

Jake is the man! He should start his own "Bible Of Boxing".

He could call it "Boxing According To Jake".

Steve_Dave could write a regular column about the Heavyweights titled "The Hungryman Special" while Free Ike pens an ongoing series called "Midgets I'd Like To See Killed In The Ring!"

Ring Magazine Launches Newly Designed Site
Ring to Distribute Content on Yahoo! Sports
Los Angeles - November 20, 2008 - The Ring Magazine, "The Bible of Boxing," announced today that it has launched a re-designed website (http://www.thering-online.com<wbr>) and begun a content alliance with Yahoo! Sports. The new site is a co-branded The Ring and Yahoo! Sports offering, and features the latest from Ring Magazine, as well as more than 75 years of the magazine's archives. Additionally, as part of the new content alliance, the Yahoo! Sports boxing channel will feature editorial and video content from The Ring online. The announcement was made by Richard Schaefer, CEO of Sports and Entertainment Publications, Inc., owner of The Ring.
"We wanted to bring the magazine into the 21st Century and we can't think of a better partner to accomplish this with than Yahoo Sports," said Schaefer. When we purchased the publication in October, it was with an eye towards a strategic alliance like this one and we are convinced that this will be the first step in our goal to make The Ring and The Ring online the ultimate resource for boxing fans."
The Ring Magazine, which focuses exclusively on the sport of boxing, has been published continuously since 1922. The online destination will feature writing from award-winning journalists, including Nigel Collins, Doug Fisher, Joe Santoliquito and Mike Rosenthal. The Ring online will also draw upon some of the biggest names in boxing to contribute regular columns, blogs and videos that will cover the sport on a global basis. Additionally, the new venture will digitize the archives of The Ring, which will become the basis for one of the most extensive and complete searchable databases of boxers, fights and colorful boxing characters from the last century.
The Ring online content, which will be featured on the Yahoo! Sports boxing front page, will offer:
n Timely, daily updates from the world of boxing
n Feature pieces and profiles from The Ring editorial staff
n Extensive archival and historical material from the history of The Ring
    n Searchable statistical databases
n Live and archival video from topical events

If it wasn't for yahoo, hardly anyone would go to the ring site.

whether or not that's true is certainly open to debate, but if anything, it's a smart move by The Ring.

Why didn't any other major boxing site go after that affiliation??

  27. Joe King

That's what mostly everyone is hoping for, me included. The RING magazine helped me keep track of boxing when I was really young. I would go into the bookstore and read it while my parents went shopping. I bought one here and there, but mostly it was the one reading in the store. It would really bring back some memories.

I wish I had an answer for you. I thought ESPN was going that route - at one point they had semi-regular contributions from Eric Raskin and Bill Detloff. But ever since they announced the deal with Yahoo, neither of them any longer contribute to ESPN.

I don't know of too many notable websites that like The Ring or are very interested in supporting their cause. I guess we'll find out for sure next month when we elect a new BWAA President - one of the candidates is Joe Santoloquito.

Yahoo has their own news department now, so they are pretty much competing with ESPN. I know Maxboxing has ESPN and HBO. That's the best you can get right there.
