Here we have the new self-proclaimed most feared men in boxing Paul Williams, much like Margarito a few years ago, and we have the unbeaten tall southpaw, many believe to be one of, if not the best 154 pounder in the world, calling him out. So will Paul Williams be Margarito enough to put his new found fame where his mouth is and fight Sergei Dzinziruk, when there are more winnable and lucrative fights like Cory Stinks or Vernon Forrest. Ah what a nice turn of events. Let´s see how much these press releases are truly worth now. :crafty:

Unlike Margarito, though, Williams doesn't have a very good promoter and certainly not one that has a substantial pool of similarly-weighted fighters.

That may be a good thing for fans if it helps bring about Dzinziruk-Williams.

I think he just means in terms of being avoided. (or at least claiming to be)

Courtesy of Max Kellerman who clearly dreams of black mens' penises.

Williams gave himself the moniker most feared man in boxing, much like Margarito a few years ago. Back then Margarito was challenged by an undefeated southpaw loooking to prove himself. Margarito true to his word ducked nobody and gave Williams his shot, although it jeopardized and ultimately postponed his fight with Cotto. So will Williams do the same and fight the real WBO champion Sergei Dzinziruk, who many regard to be one of the best 154 pounders. It´s easy to say you´ll fight anybody and that nobody wants to fight you, but will he take on Dzinziruk, who doesn´t have much of name, but a lot of talent. Just like a certain Paul Williams a few years ago.

Williams has fought 2 marks in a row, he better step it up now, or really is going to become another Marge. Banging on about being avoided, only to somehow not end up fighting any top fighters, every when they call you out.

The thing with Williams is he doesn't have a Cotto fight looming.

I don't see many "promoted" fighters looking to fight him, at 147 or 154, so we'll see what he does if he doesn't take this fight.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Clottey fight if he moves back down.

No he didn't. He was the only one in a group of top welterweights to somehow never have a big fight. If he really wanted a big fight, he would have got one, just like Morales, Floyd, Pacman and many others managed to do before they were really well known.

Like Calzaghe, Marge clearly didn't have a burning desire to fight a big fight before he finally fought Cotto.

Hmm he fought Santos, Clottey, Lujan, Cintron (2x) and Williams. That´s a pretty good line-up of fighters. Then he fought Cotto, now he´ll fight Mosley. I don´t know how much more you could ask for in the last four years. :dunno:

I don't know if I agree with that, though perhaps we might be looking at it from two different angles. Goossen doesn't quite have the juice or the man power to match Top Rank and Golden Boy, but is a rare promoter that stands by his fighters, even if it means taking money out of his own pocket to keep them busy.

But between Goossen and more so Al Haymon, Williams could stand to have worse connections in the sport.

yep, was gonna say the only dunkers Margarito's faced in that span are Manuel Gomez and Golden Johnson. His resume may not be spectacular (save for Cotto) but is easily the most underrated

I saved myself the time to mention these two, since I figured REED would come into the thread and make it sound like Margarito fought nobody else in the past five years. :kick:

Yeah, Goossen's not bad for a fighter - up to a certain point.

The positive with him is that he can put a lot of time into a James Toney or Paul Williams.

But he's on the second or third tier of promoters, IMO.

Mosley had a SIZABLE Points Lead, Prior to STRETCHING Gomez...The Fight was "Tough" N the Sense that it DIDN'T Look like Shane Could HURT him, Until the Very End...

But let's NOT Make it Seem like Gomez was THREATENING To BEAT Mosley that Night...Talk about "Rewriting History"...

No he wasn't. Let's look at the articles and odds around this time.

    http://www.doghouseboxing.com/Hudgins/Hudgins021806.htm

    ANTONIO MARGARITO (32-4 23 KO's) vs MANUEL GOMEZ (28-10-2 19 KO's)

Antonio Margarito is the most feared fighter in boxing today. Nobody at welterweight wants to have anything to do with him. Baldomir, Mayweather, Judah, Gatti, Vargas, Mosley, De La Hoya, not only will none of these fighters face Margarito, they won't even mention his name! They pretend like he doesn't exist in hopes that he'll just go away. So far he hasn't gone anywhere, but he has to settle for facing opponents like Manuel Gomez, who have no business being in the same ring as him. Gomez is game and will give it his all, and while this may be entertaining for a time, it's a mismatch.

    http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2006/feb/17/take-five-margarito-vs-gomez-preview/

Margarito is a minus-1200 favorite according to odds at the Aladdin sports book, meaning bettors must risk $12 for each $1 they're trying to win.

I agree, but where would Paul Williams be right now if he were promoted by, say Top Rank, Don King or Golden Boy? My guess is, no further along than he is right now.

Maybe a Williams-Clottey fight becomes a little easier to make (not that it's THE welterweight fight people clamor), but he's still the guy that Arum isn't in a hurry to match up against Cotto, nor would Golden Boy allow him to fight Oscar or probably even Shane, unless Paul was willing to take very short money.

Fuck it, I'll say it - save for Goossen and maybe Lou DiBella, there aren't very many promoters left who seem to know how to move a talented black fighter these days.
