Gary Shaw's done alright with Chad Dawson.

I think if Williams was with Top Rank he'd be further along. For as much criticism as Top Rank got from how they handled Mayweather, they still did more for his career than most promoters probabl could.

I doubt Wiliams would have gotten much of a push at 147 from Top Rank, though...not with Cotto coming up the ranks.

Whatever success a fighter enjoys with Shaw is almost exclusively due to his relationship with Showtime. As far as marketing him...

Tickets sold for his fight with Antonio Tarver (the one everyone demanded of Tarver to accept for more than a year) weren't even in the thousands, but the hundreds.

For his homecoming against Ian Gardner, Arben and I killed time at ringside by literally counting the people in attendance.

I agree with you that Arum did more for Mayweather than for which he gets credit, but I don't see him doing the same for Williams. I have an easier time seeing him go the way of Joshua Clottey, accepting whatever table scraps are offered while kept away from his prize possessions.

Put it this way - I don't see Arum or Golden Boy getting P-Will a $900,000 payday for a fight with Quintana. I'm not even sure Cotto made that much against him.

Yeah, I was going to put that Showtime bit in there about Shaw but decided it went without saying.

Shaw puts almost no effort into attendances...which is apparent with some of the locations he comes up with, and the proximity to the fight they're chosen.

I'm not sure the end result with Goossen is often much better, though.

With Williams and Top Rank, it would come down to what motivation there was for moving Williams. It's possible he gets lost in the shuffle, especially if he stayed at 147.

But I don't know, they took a chance on Anthony Thompson, and if he didn't turn out to be a bust perhaps we'd have more to go on.

Williams isn't from a market they generally cater to, but they did go out and get the Peterson brothers so occasionally they go outside of that (as they also did with Korobov).
