who was the rag doll on the ropes in the last round?

and whether or not you think Quartey out-boxed ODH, and hit him with jabs, he fought very passively, and almost always let ODH be first.

it's clear he was weary of ODH's power and as a result he fought very passively for 80% of the fight.

ODH did too btw. But whereas Quartey threw hardly anything but jabs, ODH was throwing more power shots.

Bottom Line: Quartey fought NOT to lose. And basically fought one handed.

I think too many people gave Quartey the benefit of the doubt in close rounds because he was tossing that jab out. But he didn't land it that often and it was usually answered by a flurry of power-shots from ODH.

ODH also made his jab work in spots, ducking, and throwing it up.

ODH didn't dominate too many rounds. But that doesn't mean he lost.

Another example of the bias levied against ODH throughout his career was his fight with Carr. People act like he was losing that fight and needed a knock-out to win.

I remember years ago I watched this fight in slow motion..this is effective because not do you not only see everything but you can ignore announcers and crowds who don't offer much...anyhow I recorded every punch..even the glancing shots....at the end of each round i would tally the results...in the end....I had Oscar winning the fight by 1 point basically because of his ass kicking of quartey in the last round...a very close fight

i also did that for the tito vs hoya fight and had hoya winning 7 rounds to 5...tito won rounds 10 to 12 to make it respectable

your right...people forget that you don't need to dominate a round to win it...rounds are scored individually.....hoya admittingly has that ability to do just a little bit more then the other guy to win rounds

you need to land punches to win rounds. delahoya didn't do much of that in most rounds during that particular fight.

your right...the rounds that ike won were for the most part convincing..the rounds that hoya won were really close....if we just had that as a 36 minute fight without rounds then i would admit that i feel despite the late hoya rally that quartey won the fight but it aint that way

Foreman was in rare form during this fight.

Larry Merchant: Oscar is not doing much.

George Foreman: Uh, not much is a lot for Oscar De La Hoya. Not much IS A LOT.

foreman is/was a delahoya dick rider but he made a good point there.

I took it to mean that the judging would be HEAVILY slanted in the favor of delahoya (which it was) and that not doing much, not opening up and not risking getting hit with hard shots in return if he did was his best bet for victory.

Unfortunately you have factors that collude with that reality Neil. First: Judges can't see all the punches to make the distinction... so they have to make a judgement and... with the culture of the punchstat it has become a mark of ditinction and a way to win a fight to simply slog away and have HBO decry how your punch stats are giving you such an advantage. Horrible situation really.

It was one of those fights that was so good I did not keep score and when the judges gave it to Oscar I had no problem with it. It was a great fight no matter who you thought won the fight, the kd in the the 12th and seeing Oscar give his heart to win was great. Wish we would have seen that in the
Tito fight which Oscar really won imo, I also think Oscar won the 2nd Mosley fight easily and was robbed. Those are two losses I think he should not have.

I remember that in my mind the fight was over until the last round. I think I still had Ike winning by 1 point, but honestly I never was that upset about it. Oscar has always said Ike Quartey was the hardest hitter he ever fought, even harder than cement wraps Tito. Ike didn't fight the best fight either. I think, at that time, he was the better fighter. I am surprised people still cry about this fight. It wasn't Tito/DLH bad or even Sturm/DLH BAD(IMO that was a top 5 all time robbery, Tito/DLH being up there too)

It bothers me more than some of the other DLH fights because it was pretty easy to score. Much easier to score than DLH's fights with Whitaker or Mosley 2, for instance. Even Jim Lampley was sounding desperate for DLH toward the end of the fight. And he'll look for any reason he can to suck off Oscar.

If someone says DLH won by a point, I just say it's generous to DLH, but not totally unreasonable.

When people say DLH clearly won because of the 12th, which I do hear quite a bit...that's just ridiculous.

I thought DLH won against Trinidad, although I thought the fight was closer than often said (there were some close rounds before DLH tired). Both guys disappointed but at least DLH did some pretty good boxing before he stayed away, whereas Tito was pretty shitty throughout.

what i can't stand is when people try to claim that ODH didn't clearly win the 12th round. he knocks the guy down and then beats like a rag doll on the ropes, and because there happened to be a minute and a half of inactivity that follows, he didn't dominate the round? :atu:

Who argues that he didn't win the 12th? There's no conceivable argument for his not winning that round.

The greatest (and really only) debate I recall seems to be whether it should've been scored 10-8 or 10-7.

Without you even saying it the moment I saw the thread I said to myself "Muzse scored the fight for Quartey".

You always pick against De la Hoya and you always score close fights with De La hoya involved against him.

You are one of teh best fight analysts here...but you are perhaps the one who's motivated more by BIAS than anyone else.

Anyway...I think I had quartey up by ONE POINT as is the consensus opinion of that fight. 7-5 for Quartey...Oscar gets the benefit of a 10-8 last round.

agREED... this post and an earlier post mentioning the 11th round swing factor completely sum my thoughts of this fight. I had it 7-5 Ike, 114-113 total, but can see a 1 pt win for Oscar if you scored the 11th his way.

i can't see how round 12 wasn't a 10-7 round. if you watch closely, the ropes were holding Quartey up - that's a knock-down according to the rules. I don't care if he was throwing back or not. Had it not been for the ropes it would've been Simon Brown all over again.

Who claims that DLH didn't win the 12th? I've never heard anyone argue that.

The only argument there is if it's a 2 or 3 point round.

the ropes did clearly keep him up on the monster left hook by hoya...but cmon double...you know if thats called a knockdown it just only adds fuel to the fire and everyone is like oh...the reff favored hoya..bla bla

i had hoya winning by a point as did the country of ghana which called quartey a sore loser

don't listen to the announcers and watch the fight OSCAR WON. Another thing, I forgot how much passion Oscar used to have in the ring. He was a great fighter.

Having just rewatched this fight last night , IMO it's the same as I recall then. A very close fight that DLH managed to pull off in the 12th.

Had Quartey won the 12th IMO it was a draw , but I fell DLH clearly won the 12th.

And again...I can see a close win for Oscar but for two judges to give him 8 rounds is a farce.

You don't know the rules. Only a referee can determine what a knockdown is. Not a judge. A judge has to deduct points for knockdowns based on the call of the referee.
